I have 41K on my 97. Have done regular maintenance. It seems every time I have the valves adjusted the cam bolts either break off in the head or the threads pull out requiring a Time Cert. I am considering never adjusting them again. Other than that it has been bulletproof.

Well hopefully my case is rare. The first time I had it done some of the bolts broke off in the head so I figured that they were over torqued previously BUT the the last time I had it done threads pulled out of the head requiring a few timecerts. It is a Honda for Gods sake. By the way I am not sure it even needed to be checked as it runs fine but has 41K on it and I have only had them adjusted once before. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Russ G, did you loosen each bolt on the cam cap consecutively, in other words loosen each a slight bit at a time so the cam caps get pushed strait up rather than an angle. This is very important, that cam pushing at an angle is what causes those threads and bolts to fail. my story: I took the speedo off at around 48,000 (guestimate through gearing change) put on I'd say another 20,000, mostly stunting long freeway wheelies, did the second gear thing, one clutch (barnett, with springs from a triumph daytona), one cam chain, one cam chain tensioner, rectifier from an f-3, and only three valves so far needed re-shim. no other bike in history has held up as good as this thing.....did I mention it cart-wheeled about 4 times in a paking lot once, picked it up and drove home with a bent clip-on... yea indestructable. again regular maintenance is the key, keep an eye on oil and change regularly.
