You need the fan so it will not overheat. A smaller bike would be better to start on, I would agree to, however, you need power to stay away from the big metal boxes on wheels. Here is a few tips for a new rider. 1. There are 3 places to ride in the lane, (1) right, (2) center and (3) left ride to the left near the center line where you can be seen (this will also aid in not confusing the on-coming traffic). The center is full of oil and real bad when wet. When riding where cars have right hand drive you need to be on the right side of the lane. 2. Always follow the traffic laws. This means not riding along side of traffic to get ahead. or pulling up along side a car to take a left turn. 3. Always treat each and every car or truck as a threat and never let your guard down. When push comes to shove they will win 100% of the time. 4. When changing lanes or turning, look behind you, chances are there will be a car riding up behind you off to one side. 5. Slow down at intersections. Just because the light is green does not mean that people are looking for you. When crossing the intersection, look at all stopped vehicles and check to see if their front tire is turning. Way to many bike accidents are caused by cars pulling out n front of bikes. I never pass in front of a car without the thought that it will suddenly pull out in front of me.

I agree with cbr 1988, give yourself some more time before you take on any bike. Also about the fan, chances are that either the thermostate or the wiring is at fault. Not a great problem if your machanically minded or understand the basics. Have some paticients and see where it leads.

yes i will give myself some quality time before I ride because I will have done the msf and the dmv motorcyle written and read good motorcycle safety books. by the way I took the motorcyle written test and failed. I was 2 questions away to passing. I will go tomorrow and pass the exam. Thus having my temporary motorcyle permit I will drive the hurricane slowly home on residential roads or highway and then I will park it there and confiscate it until I pass the msf. After that I will ride her with my new skills. I am going to take a mechanic to find out about the fan and give me the ok before I buy the hurricane. Because if its too much money to fix I will not buy it.

I would say paitence Tightride... A lot of things you learned on a dirtbike will definately help you stay out of trouble, but things are still much different on the street. The MSF course is the best for handling charateristics, but it does not involve you in things you will need to avoid / dodge out in the streets. The only thing to prepare you for that is experience. Experience comes with time. I wanted a cool sportsbike when I was 24yrs old too. I took a test ride on a 1988 ZX-6 that year, and was really wanting a 750. What is the first thing I did??? Of course, I turned the corner and let her rip!! The one thing I found out real quick was the 600cc bikes aren't as slow as I thought they would be!!! I had that 600 at 85mph in 2nd gear, with room to grow!! The bike taunted me to go faster too! I took the bike back, and told the guy I wanted to look around a little more. I didn't buy it cuz I thought I was gonna kill myself! Now you must understand, I'm a level headed smart guy, but I also like speed. And from what you already said, you have already tested her a little already!! Most of the people I know that started on a 1000k bike got pretty freaked out riding in traffic, and doing some novice things that you can't learn by reading a book and they completely stopped riding because of a scare or a drop. Keep in mind, the bike is built to go fast and it will taunt you to do that without you even knowing it. She's very smooth, and a 100mph is a wrist twitch away.. And its soo much fun to do! But you know what?? You can do the exact same thing on a 600cc bike, and learn some very valuble skills that will allow you to truly appreciate that 1000F your considering buying. A 600 is more nimble and can allow for some novice mistakes that the cbr1k may not. Overcook a turn, and she'll run real wide.. Stop at too much of a slight angle, and 600 pounds of bike will fall over on ya. 600cc's = less weight, and easier to handle. NOTE: I did say easier, they are still very fast and nimble themselves! Just something for you to think about. The thermostat is what is causing the fan not to work properly. I priced one at the dealership a few months ago, it was 70.00 at the dealership. They give the instrument cluster the temp of the water, and they control the front fan. Of course if at a stop the engine will get warm and thats normally when the fan would come on, and yes it can overheat the bike. If it sits there long enough and gets hot enough. Check out http://www.ronayers.com for some pricing on parts. They have good prices sometimes, you have to shop around! You are the only one who can make the decision to buy or not. But even the best riders in the world started on 80cc bikes!! Hehehe.. So did I! Good luck..

Ok. Now your going to have to put the damage right. The main problem is going to be the fairing, you can get an after market one but the issue is how well will it fit, so I would suggest getting a second hand one a making the repairs yourself, secondly, the fan, check the thermostate first and then onto the wiring to find the fault. Also, give the bike a thorough going over checking for leaks and loose bolts. This will help you to understand your bike when anything goes wrong in the future. Although these bikes are quick, the braking system is not what I would call the best, so you will need to check the discs for hairline cracks and the pads for uneven wear. When you are out on the road, try the rear brake and see how it responds, it wont be as good as the front but it is still an effective brake. Hope you also got the right riding gear as you need to have some protection from those that dont see you. And have a great ride, treat the bike with the respect that it deserves and it will look after you. Good luck

tightride07, Check out this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEQtWjOuBB8 It shows one of the classic motorist moves that result in motorcyclist injuries. The infamous "left turning automobile". Followed by motorist saying,"Officer, I never saw him". This accident scenario was common before motorists started using cell phones, navigation systems, cupholders for coffee, using laptops while driving, text messaging, etc.,etc. Always assume the motorist will do the stupidest thing possible and you will increase your chances of surviving the street. Jon You're not paranoid if you know they're out to get you!

Jorge, Miami? Florida has another hazard to condition yourself for, "the driving dead". Where I'm located we see the "snowbirds" when they return from their seasonal sojurn in your state. Whenever I see a Florida plate I give 'em a wide berth-dumb motorist moves get compounded when the driver is a "snowbird". Guess the northerners have some dollar advantage if they register their cars in Florida. Several years ago an up and coming road racer(a Florida native) was killed on Florida roads. His last name was Jacks(I'm thinking his first name was Michael or Miguel, I'll have to check) and he was very, very good. So take care, even the guys who have bike skills most of us can only dream about can get caught out by the steel boxes.

Jorge, Got name wrong, wasn't Miguel or Michael was Donald(Jacks). Link below, if it works, will give details of accident which resulted in his death. He was taken out by a bicyclist who turned into his path! http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcdaily/day0028.html As the sergeant in the TV show "Hill Street Blues" used to say at the end of his briefing for officers going on duty, "Be careful out there." Jorge, Message in previous post a little confusing. Point being now that drivers devote more time to their onboard toys than to driving, the "left turning auto" accident is only going to get worse. Jon

I agree with starting out on something smaller...and lighter ;) Definitely takes some getting used to a big, heavy bike. The new bikes are like toys compared.

the fan switch isnt stock..he added that. and you can run the fan all the time on that bike...its fine. I started out on my 1000F but like one of the other guys said, I think its a bit big to be startin out on. Its not dangerously fast but itll hurt you if you dont have respect for it. Its just a big bike and alot of weight to be learning on. It is a sold quality bike though.
