Ok, here goes my little dilema, i was riding my bike to figure out the range of it before i would have to switch over to reserve, got to 194 mi and it died. So i switch to reserve and nothin, no reserve. It was on a hill so i thought oh the gas must of sloshed backward and out of range from the resereve filler. So i fill it up and todayit dies at 173 mi no hill or nothing. Nothing in reserve. So now im wondering if the bike is just stuck on reserve all the time or what? Or maybe it is something with the fuel filter? any ideas or advice (maybe a solution) or whatever would be great thanks

first off is the selector in the right position? up- resv down-on..

is there still gas in the tank when it dies or is it completely empty.

if there is some gas left then the filter for the reserve may be clogged.. if i am not mistaken there is 2 filters in the tank one for resv and one for on. but i would take the petcock out of the tank and check its operation too. hope this helps

how much gas do you put into it after you fill up again? if you are putting in more than 3.5 gal. then you are running on your reserve all the time. I know that i cant get more than 150 miles without switching to reserve and i get roughly 50-58 mpg. i cant imagine that you would get much more than that.

It is not on reserve according to the little toggle on the side ( down on, straight off, up reserve). So i don't think it is that it must have a block in the line, or a pinch or clogged fuel filter is what i have determined it to be. Im pullin everything off tomorrow so ill know for sure then. I was wondering if maybe it could b e my carbs? blocked or something. Although the guy i bought it from said they were cleaned about 8 months ago,, so they shouldn't be clogged, unless the just used the carb cleaner and didn't run the small gauge wire through them. Oh well we'll see.

I put in 3.1625 gal on 163.5 mi. last time
3.620 for 184mi so i guess it must be running on reserve
but i can still see gas in the bottom when it dies.

that sounds about right...i get ~150 and have to switch to reserve.

even though you can still see gas, it may not be enough to keep constant fuel in the line to supply the carbs.

sounds like its time to replace the fuel selector/petcock...or just set your trip meter and keep an eye on it.

Stock there is no actual fuel filter on the bike. There is a screen that surrounds primary pick up that sticks out of the petcock itself. The screen is larger in diameter than the pick up, and also encloses the lower pick up for reserve... ie the same screen strains fuel for both pickups. I'd say somehow you are always on reserve and just emptying the tank. I dont get near the mileage with mine you are with yours, though I ride pretty hard. I get about 130 miles on the main and about 40 on reserve.
