Well I'll tell ya ... if you're doing over 160mph then your handling is seriously comprimised. But when I'm approaching a sweeper I need to know how fast I'm going so I can determine whether to brake or accelerate. Doesn't matter how fast you're going you have to check the gauges just like you would under normal riding. What you gonna do when you're cruising at 142mph and the engine seizes because you didn't notice the temp was off the scale? I'm not saying you should fixate on the speedo or instrument cluster but you really should have a regular schedule of checking everything.

Your avarage motorcycle rider isn't prepared to deal with the excessive speed like that, I thought I was and almost killed myself just by being tired, having diminished reflexes and glancing at the speedo at 140 mph. One of the best quotes I read was from Keith Code (I think) "if you're going to ride 150 miles per hour, you better know how to brake at 150 miles per hour!" Like you wrote, "your handling is seriously comprimised."

Remember that at 160 mph you're going aproximately 235 feet per second, almost the distance of a football field in one second! One wrong move and in a blink of an eye it's all over! No retakes, replays or second chances...before you even think about reacting you could be splattered all over the road! That's some serious stuff!

Holy shit man. Just reading these posts is making me nervous. I am still on the break in period on my 6RR and I was going 80 on the freeway and that seemed nuts, I cant imagine going 150+. I still get scared on a turn going 50 thinking the bike will slip out from under me. Maybe I am just a puss but this being my first street bike I never had to worry abou tthese things on my quad

ride at your own pace...once you start doing speeds of 130 here and there 80 - 90 will be your open area crusising speed...that's mine now...but ride at your own pace...soon 50 mph will feel like 35 in a car..lol..

See the link in my previous reply...you might not want to spend so much time looking at the speedo to see you're at 13.5 RPM and 164 MPH. All it takes is a split second at that speed and because your going over 200 ft/sec and by the time your synapses even get the message to pull the brake, you've already gone close to the distance of a football field!

I learned my lesson and survived and I pray everyone else will be as blessed...

I'll see what mine does at VIR full course this weekend.....I just did the first 500 mile oil/filter change so I'm ready to ride it like it's meant to be ridden...I'm hoping everything's broken in....haha.....thoughts.

And wow about the new R1....I have a friend with a few 98 R1s - and I thought those were pretty fast. I couldn't imagine 100mph in first gear. I just wish you could control that much power on the track. Even these 600's are getting harder to control coming out of corners....

This thing is fast enough for me. I wont' be getting another bike for a while. I was pretty loyal to yamaha until I bought this thing. It's treated me right thus far (only had a week though). I gave up on the whole brand loyalty...a nice bike is a nice bike...they're all nice....I just happened to get a deal on this one and I love the bike. I must admit though...that new R6 is going to be sweet....I just couldn't wait and didn't want to spend the extra 2500 to get it....not a big fan of the pipe on those though...I much prefer the Honda undertail...that shorty coffee can just looks so out of place....what does everyone else think on that?

That is a good one. Here I was converting MPH into Knots trying to figure it out.

sorry.... had to make a joke. With my lack of willingness to go to jail, I've only made it up to 120 on my overly crowed I64.
