Joining recent anti-motorcycle efforts in Jackson, New Jersey and in White Plains, New York, the Police in Oceanside, Long Island are singling out and harassing motorcyclists.

Targeting visitors to Nathan's regular Tuesday night "hang", on Tuesday July 29th, the Hempstead Police installed a checkpoint southbound on Long Beach Road immediately approaching the entrance to Nathan's. This checkpoint was marked by a sign saying "Nassau County Sobriety Checkpoint", but the traffic stop had nothing to do with sobriety and definitely had nothing to do with anything but motorcycles.

Armed with an SPL (sound pressure or "dB") meter, the officers went about enforcing a "local noise ordinance" of 72 dB. Loud cars were ignored, but all manner of motorcycles, including "Street Bikes" and "Harleys", were pulled over wholesale. If you were riding too close to someone with a "loud" bike, you were pulled over too. Guilt by association, and loosely at that! Police pulled over as many motorcycles as they could fit into the parking lot they commandeered for the purpose.

The "local noise ordinance" is an arbitrary figure that has nothing to do with DOT standards, nor any other standard, and the noise tests (observed and photographed by Brad Berson) were conducted unscientifically in an echoing back-alley with the noise meter placed varying distances from the bike and/or exhaust system.

Police at the scene brazenly posed for photographs and boasted that in NY State they have the right to single out any vehicle they please. Mentions of constitutional implications and references to probable cause went un-answered. The Police maintained the roadblock for the duration of the evening.

Jackson NJ - home of Six Flags Great Adventure - recently redirected DOT funds intended for alcohol awareness publicity at motorcycle events in order to pay for its motorcycle-only traffic stops.

Westchester NY's Police Department is currently targeted in a class-action law suit for recently targeting motorcycles travelling to Danbury CT's "Super Sunday". For more information see http://www.moto-mag.com/news/blacksunday.html .

In spite of these motorcycle-harrassment stops, police were only able to issue statistically unremarkable numbers of summonses. This only proves again that their efforts would be better spent sticking to finding drunks drivers and criminals no matter how many wheels they choose to use.

F'n cops... grant it I've got friends in the force and I've run into some cool officers, but for some reason (mainly my last college town harrasment from the local PD) I just cant stand cops when they pull shit like this. Makes the whole force look bad and I for one just keep losing what little respect I had for em.

Sorry to the guys on the forum who are PD, more power to ya and stay cool, but work this from the inside guys, stupid shit like this is just another reason why I run.

I get harrassed all the time going into the front gate at the base.  I go through year-round on my bike, and this one asshole will always give me some crap,.  The navy has a regulation about what gear and such you have to wear, I have read the instuction and am very familiar with it.  In short, reflective, brightly colored clothing, sturdy footwear, long sleeves, pants and gloves.  I ride in red Fieldsheer gear with my work-boots, steel-toed leathers.  Going through the other day, he gives me crap about not wearing a reflective vest.  I say the regulation requires reflective, brightly colored clothing...wich my riding jacket fits the bill.  He says, are those shoes steel toed?   I say yes but they don't have to be....so he gets pissed and directs me off to the inspection lane and gives me crap.   I say I'll be back and educate him.   I go to my shop, print out the regulation and ask him to show me where I was in violation....he just gives me this ummmmm ummmmm well, you don't have to be uncooperative crap...I say whatever, if your gonna enforce rules you might want to know them first.   Maybe I was worse off for it but every time that dude is working the gate he gives me a thourough once over, just lookin for something with this shit-eatin grin on his face.    I mean, it's cool if you go through the gate in some POS with one headlight out, bald tires, and no turn signals, seat layed back so you cant see over the dash and your tunes up so loud it shakes the cars in the line, but holy hell, don't be on two wheels!   Amazing.

I called the Security officer, he said he wasn't familiar with that reg and threw me a bunch of lame questions and BS.    Oh well, not like it's every morning or anything, just when I happen to get him in my line when I pull up, even then, I better be A-J squared away, but I always am fully geared up so nothing the guy can do except be a shithead.

Okay, I have mixed feelings here, so I'm going to explain myself very thoroughly........

Yes, some cops are out of line targeting mainly sportbike riders in some areas. Luckily, I haven't had that problem here in my city, the cops around here are pretty cool.

-BUT-..........can you really blame them 100%??.......here's my reasoning backing my argument.........

Not all sportbike riders are "responsible" people. There are squids and jackasses amongst us that don't care about the image they protray as sportbike riders. These riders (i'll use the term "squids" from hereon) install extremely loud D&D (for example) exhaust systems on their bikes, knowing they're WAY too loud. To make things worse, these "squids" ride around residencial zones at 2 am in first gear waking the dead. So yeah, I can see that if there's enough complaints (and squids to complain about), things like this will happen.

In fact, I called the police on a neighbor about a week ago (major jackass by the way), because he's running open headers on a Camaro. Doesn't bug me, but he cruises around the neighborhood at 2-3 am every freaking night, and it woke me up everynight for weeks on end. So I confronted him about the situation, he continued to be a jackass, then he made it a routine to blip the throttle while passing my house everynight. Needless to say, when I filed the complaint, the noise stopped. Same thing can be applied to irresponsible sportbike riders too.

But Remember, there's only a bias towards us because of the few that go out and ruin it for the rest of us. If people weren't getting pissed off at the noise level of the bikes (which is the riders responsibility), then there wouldn't be any motorcycle noise ordinances. So don't blame the cops 100%, blame the irresponsible riders that rev the bikes and ride at high rpms with loud exhaust systems through residencial zones at 3 am. THOSE people are the source of the problem, not the officers.

Just something to think about. Comments and retaliations welcome.

I used to go to that nathans all the time but the cops have been harrassing people the last few summers...just not as extreme as a fake sobriety test....
BS, if you ask me....what about the drunk drivers that get waved past because they're not on a bike?????????

Good points fox, I think that both groups have individuals that ruin it for the rest of them, bikers and cops alike.... However in my case I am on the bikers side simply because I'm not a cop. It's circumstantial and I realize that not every cop (or biker) is a pain, but I still hate cops for more than just the bike harrasement.

First of all, the cops on the street have nothing to do with their commanding officers requiring their participation in these, "round-ups."

It's not the cops you hate, they are drones doing as their told to kepp their jobs.  Not much different from anyone else sweeping the floor of their factory because the boss said so.

No my friend, what you hate is the political agenda behind it.  This whole thing, it's bigger than a cop.  It's bigger than a politician, in fact it's bigger than the United States.  Anyone who ever thought that free will existed on a level above the common man is just plain wrong.

Your free will is the only thing that seperates you from the demon shapeshifters that rule the world...

Now, if I had read that statement 36 hours ago, I would have laughted.  Unfortunately I have spend the last 24 hours picking my jaw up off the floor in amazement of what I had been sheltered from... the truth.

I know this isn't the time and place, but it's related.  The cops you speak of and that are one the street have nothing to do with this, it's the players behind the scenes.  Your frustration as a response to it is calculated as well.

We are nothing more than a real life Sims game with a few people at the ultimate controller.  The Earth is Satans playground.

Unreal...  sorry, but true.

I have assuredly lost all credibility I may have gained from members on this forum.
