yeah, it pretty much looks like personal preference on what you can do.  do you want to spend the extra cash to get a system that is ready for next gen upgrades (i use this term very lightly), or do you want to upgrade your current system to its max and have to buy a completely new system next time, minus HD and RAM.  any upgrade will make a substantial impact on your performance right now.  256MB of RAM just doesnt cut it nowadays.

I would also wait a few months because there are going to be alot of security holes the first couple of months like any new OS.

meh, i have been running vista full time at work since Nov and have had no issues yet.  Some difficulty running apps but that is due to the new feature of never actually running as admin, but that is it.  Once the developers get used to vista everything will be better, its just that most companies dont have vista compatible software or drivers yet, which is no fault of Microsoft's.

Its my understanding that all drivers for Vista will have to be digitally signed correct?  I know this will cut down on the amount of attacks that are possible, but I want to make sure that the drivers I want will be there when I do go.  Thats my big concern about Vista.

Well, I am going to buy the Ram Telgren showed me, maybe two if I can so I can have a gig of ram. As for the HD, Externals are on huge sales down here for some reason. 200GB for about $100-$140 for an external. But since it seems like it is going to be a b**** to get it able to run Vista, I think I am just going to find somewhere that has the XP Pro for a decent price and upgrade to that. But thanks for all your help guys!!! Very much appreciated!!!

If you do buy an external - then remove your current hd, remove the 200gig hd from the external, and swap. You want the newer bigger hd for your OS and files... the older smaller one is still a huge ammount of external space.

You'll get a way better deal buying the external enclosure and drive seperately from a computer store...

Forget about vista... I'm still running 98se on computers where it is appropriate...  xp pro is a really nice OS... no problems with it at all.

no - not that much.

I just brough a new 320 gig IDE drive for $112 CDN. I know you can buy a 200-250 for less than $100. In American dollars and prices maybe 60?

For an USB external harddrive enclosure I found them for ~$40 CDN... and a network harddrive enclosure, really cool but not what you're looking for ~$80 CDN.

so since you have a Dell does it still have the service tag and/or product key sticker on it anywhere on the outside of the case?  im sure since you have a legit copy of windows that you dont need to buy a new one.  id hate to see you spend $200 on a new OS when you legally already own one.  through Dell you may be able to download the disk off their site, so dont go buy a copy of XP just yet.

Its an HP a200n . They dont sell them anymore, atleast I dont think. All the specs are a few posts up.

What about this HD HERE

I know because its a dell it wont work better or worse, but I havent had any problems out of mine. I just wanted to know if it was a good deal or not. Because thats almost the price I would spend upgrading my puter.

That's the wrong type of harddrive likily... plus that's not a great deal anyhow... and the version of XP installed on it won't work with your hardware so you'll have to reinstall windows anyhow. For $40 then it might be worth the risk of buying a used drive... but it still won't make it work in your computer which most likely only has IDE and not SATA.

I gotta agree that there is way too much bundled stuff with it (the software) unless its a free upgrade its not needed.  I wouldnt go with just a 128MB vid card, 256 is the minimum I would go with.

Otherwise its not a bad deal.

You can get a copy of your original HP recovery disk here:
https://warp2.external.hp.com/driver/dr_country_select.asp?Product=5069-5083&lang=en&cc=us

You will need to input your original CD key and your ZIP in order to get shipping costs, but that should at least be getting you in the right direction.
