you dont have to have internet to install xp.  you need internet to get updates, but not to just install it.

If you already have wireless in the house, then use that.

If it is someone elses wireless, then don't use it. :D Especially if you plan on running a business from home. If you are going wireless then make sure you set it up properly. When it is setup properly it isn't hacker proof, but it sure makes it less of an easy target for the real threat of script kiddies.

If you buy wireless avoid D-Link. I've had many of these perform poorly in bizaar ways. Things like working well for awhile and then dropping ports/connections silently. You think you're still connected, and you can still do some things, however, not all things - you reset the connection and it suddenly works again. Linksys has worked well for me in the past - but look around and see what you can find.

If you do go with the wireless option - consider putting the router next to this computer, and plugging this computer into the router directly... it'll be faster, and somewhat safer.

Woot.

Rrasco - at home and at work I'm wireless free. (My one consideration for wireless is setting up the DS and Wii)... I probably have more networking gear at home than many small businesses... but man when it's setup it's very convient.

That being said - alot of the people I end up helping have gone wireless and love it. I personally have problems with 90% of the setups I see. No one sets them up with any form of security - which is ok if you live in the country, but not fine if you live anywhere else. The other problem many people have is with the quality of the signal - setting their router up in spot that causes the signal to be very weak where they actually use it.

I have seen some nice setups where the wired connections were trusted, and the wireless connections were isolated... it meant that the wireless connections had good internet connections, but were difficult to setup for connecting to wired shares... a feature IMHO.

Woot.

yeah i know what you mean.  someone who doesnt know better is gonna stop trying to get it to work as soon as they get the internet working.

As far as routers go, I am a big fan of linksys routers.  I have wireless going to my D-Link DSM 320 (its a wireless media player I have hooked into the big screen and stereo) and for my pocket PC.  The linksys WRT54G is probably one of the most popular routers out there.  Easy setup, and 256bit encryption all the way down to passkeys.  I have to agree though that if you are going to use wireless, plug your PC into the back of the router, it will provide a somewhat faster and more reliable connection.

Wireless is secure as long as you take the effort to make it.  There is a 26 charachter key generated from a passcode you input (so essentially the possibilities are something like 102^256*passkeylength.  Yeah its a bitch to input into the devices you want to use with it, but once its setup no biggie.  The other nice thing about a router is your will not need your software firewall running.  You can setup a router to discard pings sent by your service provider even.

Well, thecommunity I live in provides it. I wont have any financial information on there, just all the work files (no one elses information on it either) for work on there. All the text files, clip art files, etc. I am using it to run my plotter. Should I be okay buying one of those USB wireless connectors to make it wireless?

I did buy Norton Anti-Virus for all my computers at the store today, and I was told I could download something called ad-aware .... is that right?

I sent you the link for spybot search and destroy which is basically the same thing as spy-bot search and destroy.  Ad-aware programs are unique unlike virus programs as that if you run one after the other it will sometimes find things the other one wont.  I know it sounds crazy but there is no ultimate ad-removal program out there.

In terms of updaing there is an option on both S&D and ad-aware that allow you to update the latest definitions, much like norton updated itself when you installed it (assuming you did).

On the topic of wireless chances are they have a good system setup so you should probably be fairly secure.  Ask them what type of security they are running (ask if they use a 26bit WEP key or WPA key).  I am not real sure how the public routers are (I live in south dakota, there arent many people or companies who use wireless, our college doesnt even have it and we are the biggest in SD, then again that isnt saying a whole lot).  A USB wireless connector will probably be just fine for what you want to do, just dont plan on playing any first person shooters or anything crazy like that over them.

Tell us how you get along with usb wireless... personally I've not had good luck with them and tend to buy the pci wireless cards for the desktops... if you can take the fairings off a bike you can install a wireless card.

I'm not sure where you usually shop - I found this in CC for about what I'd expect to pay here in CDN dollars... somewhere around 40, and potentially as much as 60.

Since you have had your case open this will be a breeze.  Its just a matter of one screw and making sure you have grounded yourself properly (static discharge is a bitch to PC's)
