I have a '90 1000F with 90,000 kms.  I've done a lot of kms on this bike and it's always run well, and never given me any trouble.
I have just returned from 1,000km trip and left the bike for a few days - beautiful summers day so thought I'd get out and enjoy.   Bike started fine, 5kms to the petrol station, filled it up turned on the ignition the ign. lights come on and push the button - nothing happens.   No noise, nothing.  Turn the key off and on and now no lights at all.  I've had to leave it at the station pending a trailer - could it be the battery or something worse?
Love this forum!

Or the battery, if the light comes on after a small wait before turning the key

Thanks for the advice - I never thought to check the fuse under seat (looked at the ones under fairing).
Yes - if you wait a while and try sometimes the lights would come back on -but not always.

I will go down tomorrow and check it out.

What about the cables terminals on the batery? aren't they loose? Another thing that mine used to do, was the engine kill switch (the big red one on the left grip) was working from time to time so I just sunt it (weld the wires together) so i don't have any head akes. Aslo maybe your charging went down and your batery is dry. How is your batery acid level?
Do you have a voltmeter?

Thanks again,

Went down to the service station and checked whether it would start - nothing.  Checked the main fuse - it was ok so reset.  Turned the key pushed the button presto.  Went home and got my gear and when I got back no go.  Reset the fuse and away she went again.  So it would point to an electrical/earthing problem would be my guess.  At lease she's home now and I can take her to the shop without resorting to a trailer!
Thanks again for the replies.

By reset, did you mean re-seat the fuse,
I just had a look at my bike as I've never look at the fuses before, missing one spare and the required alan key to get to the fuse box (alan key used from from my garage)
I will also check the spares to see if they are good.

Yes - I meant reseat.  I noticed a chewed piece of rubber behind the plug and maybe this had caused a problem.  Anyway - 3 days on and no more problems.  Does knock your confidence a bit though.  I don't like the idea of it not starting next time I pull up at the pub and the local (and not so local) harley riders are hanging around in their frilly leathers...
