Hi, I have an '89 CBR 600 with only 15K on it that I got in August. I'm getting it ready for the track and want to make performance upgrades. It has a stock exhaust which I'm thinking of replacing with a Kerker full system. I'm going to do either a stage one or two jet kit. Anybody have an opinion on the kerker exhaust? Or full exhaust versus slip-on? I don't want loud pipes. I have the jet kit and the K and N air filter. Is it worth it to do a stage 2, or will that make it tricky to run. It starts up and runs great, except the carbs need to be cleaned-the idle varies. It's also a California bike, so I don't know it there's emission info I need to consider. Any advice you all have would be great! Thanks

welcome to the site! i really dont like the kerker's look at all. they do make a vance and hines and a D&D pipe that fit the bike as well. i have even seen a micron and a scorpion on ebay before. if you get a full system you will get a higher top end torque but you will lose a little low end torque. if you are gonna be running it on the track and need a higher top speed FS is the way to go, if you are just doing street riding then slipon would be the way to go. if you find a good deal on ebay for a FS that might make it worth it. watched a brand new D&D FS go for $150 the other day, so....they are there. the D&D is a very loud pipe though, just an FYI. these bikes did differ a little in Cali, not sure on the specifics, but it is something to do with emissions. i dont think it should really effect anything you do though.

Hi, Thanks for the tips. I'll do a slip-on. What do you know about Viper slip-ons? There's one on EBay. Also, there's a Vance and Hines SSR2, but it's $250. Are the ones you seen for $150 brand new? Got a quick search suggestion? Also, does anyone know the ID of the fuel hoses going to and from the fuel filter? Thanks

The California bikes have openings in the exhaust manifold on the front of the bike, to recirculate exhaust gases. I plugged mine up and the bike runs great without it. I also have a Kerker exhaust on my bike -- I can't tell you for sure whether or not it's faster than stock, because I bought mine with it on it already. I can tell you, however, that it is quite loud -- my neighbors complain if I don't RPM's under about 5k :)

Hi Mike, Thanks. Did/does your bike have the canister underneath it? I assume it's a carbon canister like cars have. It has a few hoses going to and from it. Do you know how to bypass it so I can remove it? Also, I'm rebuilding, cleaning, and jetting out the carbs to stage 1, putting on a K and N air filter, and some sort of slip-on. There's a SuperTrapp in good shape. There's also a full system from Sweden that's new and reasonably priced (before shipping).

I have a full open Super Trapp, Its made for the track but it sounds very good on the street. I also wear earplugs when I ride.

Hey, I got the SuperTrapp used for $75 on EBay. It's in terrific condition. What do you mean by "wide open"-with no baffles? I do wear ear plugs, but still don't like loud pipes.

Your bike is beautiful! I have the same color. I've thought about getting a second skin seat cover like yours, but like the black too.

"wide open" would mean there is no baffle material within the can to deaden the sound. the baffle material is just a tightly bundled fiberglass mat around the perforated exhaust core. most of older model exhaust cans have it in them but can be removed and replaced. newer designed units have a removable baffle insert to use as a sound deadener. it is inserted into the end of the tail and held with a large c-clip.

I have a wide open yoshi race pipe on mine, and I absolutely love it! But if you aren't looking for loud, this wouldn't be the pipe for you haha!! But if it means anything, I get compliments on it all the time, even from a few Harley riders, and take it from me, I used to work at a Harley dealership, and if you are on a sport bike and get any compliment from some of the hardcore Harley riders.....consider yourself VERY lucky.
