ORIGINAL: mark21901 theres a lot of bullshit flying around in this forum. normally i dont post but lately i have been. if you go with a synthetic dont purchase a full synthetic that contains molybednums. (an additive that wears on the clutch. also never, never , never use oil from honda. honda service dealers do not use them except for initial service these oils such as honda gn4 are considered break in oils ive been using mobil 1 for the last 2k miles and felt a noticable difference in engine noise since switching from reg to synthetic. i am going to give amsoil a try this summer and see how it holds up under the heat. take care need to clam down a notch marky... but anywayz.. amsoil is good i would recomend it

So is it safe to say that a synthetic oil is the most recommended? I have heard a lot of different things from a lot of different people. I have talked to the local mechanics at numerous shops. Some recommend synthetics and some highly recommend not using it. I am on a fence here about what to use! A common piece of advice has been to run the HP4 synthetic blend. And that was not even at a Honda dealership. Most of the people I have questioned told me to stay away from the full synthetics due to the clutch because of friction modifiers and gumming tendencies. I don't know what to believe. My 954 is getting close to needing its oil changed and based on input from quit a few people, everyone has something different to say. I would like to pick one type of oil and stay with it because the bike has very low miles on it.

Any good quality motorbike specific oil will work fine. How often do you read or hear of engine failure due to deficiences in oil? (apart from Trumpy 675s running out of it that is). A mate used car oil and still got 196,000 km out of his 929.

Well that is just the thing. I know people who do use full synthetic and they have nothing negative to say about using a full synthetic. I figured I could get some good facts about it other then opinions from the mechanics at the local shops. I have also been told that going from a full synthetic to conventional is not a good idea at all.

a guy i used to ride with has over 60K on his z10r (04) and he uses valvoline dino oil 10/40. he gets his oil checked by blackstone labs regularly. they just said to change the oil aroud 3-4K, and other than that, the amount of trace materials present in the oil was normal. the only time it raised any flags was when he ran the K&N without any oil on there, which the results said...recommend using a better filter. abadfish used mobile 1 15/50 (old red cap, now gold cap) and he got 67K out of his F3, no issues ever. there's a lot of 'crap' floating around about oils, etc...i would suggest trying everything out for yourself and come to your own conclusions. i was a hard head and never believed what anyone said...right or wrong...so i tested it all myself. in my experience, if using regular dino car oil..swap it at most 3K....anything else, 4-5K.

after reading all this posted, I still havent gotten anything from it. Bobjoe, I bought my bike used, and dont know if he used reular, or synthetic. There is probably no way to find out either. In your opinion, which route should I take? Spending money for quality is reaonable for me.
