As I've posted elsewhere before, a mate got 196,000 km out of his 929 just using standard auto oil, with no work at all required on the engine.

That said, I use Motul or Shell synth by way of insurance.

The rec's in the Haynes manual for the change interval vary, from 6k km to 10 or 12 from memory, depending on whether its a UK or Euro model.  No idea why.  Above mentioned mate changed the oil when he remebered to.

I have been using Mobil1 MX4T for 5 years and I really like it.  However, the local place the I was getting it for $6.99 a quart is not selling it any longer, so I am switching to Repsol Synthetic this year.  I will not pay $12.99 per quart for the Mobil1.  Also...not sure if I should believe them, but everytime that I go to the Honda Shop, they are insisting that the Honda brand oil is made by Mobil1.  I have not found much proof for that statement, so I have not tried it.  The Repsol is about $7 something a quart around here, so I will switch in the spring.

...Praying for warm weather in Ohio...

Been using Shell Rotella Full Synth 5-40W in my 929.

Like I remind everybody, make sure you steer clear of oils rated as "Energy Conserving" - these oils usually contain "friction modifiers" which can have an adverse effect on clutch operation.

yooooo...synthetic boys...if you're using amsoil or other very good synthetics...there's no need to change at 3K!!!

there is plenty of myths going on...take it to www.bobistheoilguy.com and do the research for yourself!
better yet...order a kit from blackstone and start sending your oil away to be analyzed...

very true.. BUT personally i dont care.. piece of mind and it's the only thing protecting the engine.. i think i can drop a extra 30-40 bucks a time or two more then i NEED TOO to protect the bike

theres a lot of bullshit flying around in this forum. normally i dont post but lately i have been. if you go with a synthetic dont purchase a full synthetic that contains molybednums. (an additive that wears on the clutch. also never, never , never use oil from honda. honda service dealers do not use them except for initial service these oils such as honda gn4 are considered break in oils ive been using mobil 1 for the last 2k miles and felt a noticable difference in engine noise since switching from reg to synthetic. i am going to give amsoil a try this summer and see how it holds up under the heat. take care
