Does this oil look contaminated?

zrad -> Does this oil look contaminated? (2/19/2007 5:14:41 PM)

I just dropped the oil in my bike. It had only been in there for a couple of start ups. It looks a little milky too me. I think I might be getting some antifreeze in my oil. Have a look @ the pic and tell me what you think? What could cause this? Compression was 170 across all cylinders. Any thoughts?

Oops   -   I just asked about this on your other thread.
I'm sorry, man, but it sure looks like water contamination, from what I can see in the picture. With good compression like that, next I would need to check into how the water pump hooks up to see if that's a possible area were the two fluids could meet - I don't know much about the pumps on these bikes.....

I dont know any history on the bike as I bought it as a project from a salvage auction. As I posted before the compression is good and the bike fires right up and sounds very good under revs.

Okay, that's the main thing, with compression like that you're probably still OK - I'll be looking thru my manuals on this, if I find anything I'll post it.

thats definitly water in the oil! w/ only a few start ups on  new oil to turn it in to chocolate milk you gots a problem. a crack in the head doesnt have to be in the cylinder part. it can crack between a water and oill jacket. the head gasket shouldnt fail there b/c theres no real high pressure on it.

up where the thermostat is there shouldnt be any where the oil and water can mix. unless someone ran it out of water and it got too hot to warp or crack the head. behind the water pump is a o-ring to the crank case and the pump itself has a seal where the impeller shaft goes through. other than that im lost too.

If it is a cracked head or blown gasket shouldnt I experience white smoke, hard starting and a poor running engine? There is a little residue on the back of the cylinders around the gasket area. This could be from a leaking thermostat also,  its hard to say.

if it is a cracked head it doesnt have to be in the combustion chamber. dont run it any more till you get it figued out. hopefully the water didnt mess up the crank bearings.

I agree. No worries though, it's a project so tear it down and build it up.

Wow, your bike runs on gravy.

The oil cooler can be leaking. I was never a big fan of that design.

zrad -> RE: Does this oil look contaminated? (2/19/2007 9:32:22 PM)

How do I check /test oil cooler for leakage?

bosshaus1 -> RE: Does this oil look contaminated? (2/19/2007 9:49:19 PM)

carameled apples anyone?

crazy900rr -> RE: Does this oil look contaminated? (2/19/2007 10:12:17 PM)

I was going to leave this one for someone else but it hasn't been asked yet so I do it. What does the antifreez look like in the radiator/overflow. If it turns out that you need an oil cooler I got one that it'll sell for 20+shipping.

zrad -> RE: Does this oil look contaminated? (2/19/2007 10:33:13 PM)

Its fresh antifreeze and a new rad so it still "looks" ok. bike has only been run briefly. I noticed when touching the fuild on the top of the rad cap that it had a fairly oily feel to it.
