well K&N has a high flow rate so it'll mess up the fuel mixture without some kind of mapping. It can be done manually, but controlled at more points with a power commander. FYI you will lose power with just sticking a K&N filter on your bike with no emission mapping. Same as if you throw a pipe on that removes your O2 sensor. There are some slip-ons that recommend you stay with the stock air filter also so make sure you look into it before you invest... AKA Erion slip-ons.

to be honest with you I don't know anyone who's got work done without a powercommander. but count on at least an hour's labor for the settings from a performance shop... dealers just go duH?

to let you know also.. powercommander isn't your only option.. if you want to spend the big bucks you can look into yosh for an EMS module that allows for 3 presets for quick change to track or high altitudes. you can also add on to this module with rapid shifters that cut the throttle for clutchless shifting. more features available but I forget.

I put a K&N on my 04 F4i and a D&D slipon...the only prob I have is it bogs down when I first take off if I just open it wide open.It also surges a little while at idle.I didn't notice any other power loss though.I would like a power commander...not in the budget right now.

Ok , thats total crap for advise and you need to put down the crack pipe.
Those K&N filters don't flow that much air . Period . If that's his only mod a Power Commander would be a waste of money .
Just like that Yoshimura EMS Controller is a waste of money.
On the other hand , most fuel injected bikes will benefit from a Power Commander by letting you fine tune the air/fuel mixture and to compensate for certain mods.
But just for filters is a waste of time.

ok well even K&N says not to use it with a stock pipe so you do what you like.

that's nonsense... seriously. Why do you think everyone puts a K&N on ... because of the higher flow rate. You gotta read more.

I have read plenty and the general concensus is that the only advantage a K&N offers for newer sportbikes is that it lasts a lifetime. When the liter class started going nuts (around '00) the factory filters improved drastically in order to feed all the horsepower. If you want a lot more air then you'd have to go with a race filter like a BMC but you'd sacrifice filtration. Don't get me wrong -- I've run K&N filters and love 'em. But even with a PCII on one bike and a jet kit on another I didn't pick up significant HP -- just a reusable filter. A PCIII when tuned to the bike will make even a stock bike perform better but just for a filter change I wouldn't say you had to have one.
