sup fellas, i'm new to the forum.  I have a 94' cbr900rr, its been sitting for the past couple of months. i've started it and rode it about 2-3 times about a month ago. now its been sitting in the cold.  I brought her out the other day and i'm nott getting it fire up. It sounds like it wants to turn over but its like its not getting any spark.  is this just a plug problem or is there any way i can do some trouble shooting to see exactly what it is.. Thanks !!

try changing the fuel, if that doesnt work, swap the plugs.  mine did the same and after i put new plugs in she ran like a beast!

Put some new fuel in you tank and try that.  Fuel that has been sitting around loses some of its running quailities and makes it difficult to start the engine.  If this fails then test the plug leads to see if a spark is getting throuh.  If it is then you will know that there is a fault with the plugs, If not, then you will have to go further back through the electrical system to find the fault.  If this is the case, then start at the ht leads & work backwards..

well good news...changed the plugs/fuel, and she damn near fired right up. after playing with it for a lil while it fired up on full choke. any time i'd try and give it gas (after it warmed up) it would want to die. and anytime i would try and take the choke off it would die. i'm think carbs need a good cleanin now. i'm gonna go get some carb cleaner and run that threw for a while see if that helps. thanks all for the imput.

Especially when you have a tank full of crap fuel.... just give her some time to warm up... after a few minutes on full choke you will hear the idle rpm rise.... then you can back off the choke a little.... keep doing this until the choke is off........ every spring I deal with the same shit on my bike even though I used Sta-bil

Ok, now have you set the correct gauge for the plugs.  when you lift the tank up check the throttle arm for continuity on all carbs, but before you put carb cleaner through try syncing the carbs first to see if they are ballanced.  It may well be that they are out so when you put power on they cut the engine out.  Your manual should give you the details of how to do this.

I'm having the same problem with my F3, it's been sitting for months.  I poured a little gas in the carbs, opened the choke, and it fired right up.  But it would die everytime I opened the throttle, or backed the choke off.  It won't start now, so I'm going to charge the battery and clean the plugs, as I'm sure they are fouled.  I'll run some fresh fuel too, anything else I should check?  I'll probably end up taking the carbs off and cleaning them before summer, but for now can I just spray a little carb cleaner in each carb when it's idling to clean them up a little?  Or will that not really do anything?

Ok. I see this all the time if your bike is carbureted(sp) and stits for more than about 2 months with the same gas in the tank and is "fired up" once a month or so your gonna need to do two simple things to cure this problem. Fuel flush. and carb clean.

Fuel Flush: Basically draining old gas and refilling with new fresh gas. Pull the line from the petcock to the carbs from the carb side. Be sure to turn the petcock to off first. Then get a bucket and drain it into there. Reattach hose and turn petcock on. Dump some high grade gasoline in there. If you can afford or have some nice race gas lying around go for it, otherwise highest octane pump gas will do.

Carb Clean: The reason why the bike will only run with the choke on and wants to die when you give it gas is because its getting starved of fuel and flooded with air. The reason why the fuel is no good after a few months is becuase it eventually breaks down, and if it sits long enought it'll turn to varnish (I've seen it). What happened while your bike was sitting is the fuel that was already in the carb passages, lines, and jets has broken down and plugged the passages, lines and/or jets. Thus not allowing fuel to get out. Sometimes riding it out will cure it. Sometimes this doesnt work but if it does thats not the best solution becuase your bike will be running lean while your doing this. Once cured through that method your gonna need to replace the plugs. DONOT! I REPEAT DONOT RIDE BIKE WITH THE CHOKE ON!!! The chokes opens the butterfly valves in the carba and dumps more fuel in at idle therefore being use for warm up. A carb clean doesnot mean put some carb cleaner in the tank. It means pulling the carbs off, completely dissasembling them ramming the passages with a carb cleaning set, using carb cleaner spray, and compressed air to help clear out passages. Once they've been rammed and cleaned they must be reassembled and set back to ctock settings (i.e.: needle position, air mixture screw, idle rpms, fuel mixture scew, synchronization and such). This should cause your bike to run much better than before or better than ever for that matter.

The best way to store your bike for winter or several months of no use(aka Winterizig): Use a trickle charger on low charge to keep a constant cycle running throught th battery and preventing it from losing its peak voltage (12.6 at FULL charge on a brand new battery)
12.2-12.6 Should crank over most bikes and run electronics and pumps. anything less may not hold a proper charge. Stabil or a fuel stabilizer for storage should be added and bike should be run for 5-10 minutes. after runnig 5-10 minutes fuel petcock should be turned to the off position and bike run until it dies from fuel starvation. this has allowed the vaccum(sp) in the lines to suck out the rest of the fuel in the carbs and prevents fuel from breaking down in the carbs and in turn not needing a carb clean once your ready to take her out again. Store bike with petcock in off postion and let sit.

"Summerizing" disconnect battery tender and check battery voltage. 12.3-12.6 is GOOD! 12.0-12.2 is Questionable. Anything lower than 12.0 nis most likely junk. turn fuel to on position mount bike and lean/shake left to right and front to back to shake up fuel a little. Turn bike on, turn choke on and crank away until it fires. Give 3-4 Full throttle pumps at first. 0% throttle to 100% throttle and hold for no more than 1-2 seconds. Let bike crank untill fired at that point. then check all other fluids and have fun! Dont forget air pressure in tires.

Note: Gas in tank may need to be flushed again for summerizing depending on runnig condition of unit after fired up.

NOTE 2: If you dont feel comfortable doing this yourslef, take you bike to a dealer you are confident in with a good reputaion (Your buddy thats dont it once before or says thats a piece of cake (while
