I have one..I dyno at 112 RWHP.  Stock I think it was 110.  The original owner had one, but it was filthy!  I just bought a new one on ebay for 12 bucks!  Put it in...can tell a huge difference!  Fuel mileage is great.  I also noticed that oil helped my gas mileage.

Good question, i'm looking forward to what people have to say about this.

Anyway, i'll throw this into the mix - it's what I have gathered from another site I used to hang around.

Vacuum carbs depend on a 'restriction' on the intake to create the proper vacuum effect and thereby cause the slides to lift. Mechanical slide type carbs require no such effect and so you can even go without a filter or pods or whatever. So the wisdom seemed to be that if you have a standard vacuum carb set up then the best overall running results would be achieved with a stock filter set up.

I believe I am right in saying the CBR1K has vacuum carbs!

When I first bought the bike...I thought it ran well...I figured it was old and it kinda bogged out a bit when taking off.  The first thing I did was change the oil!  That alone seems to give me 5-10mpg!  I know the older oil was not synthetic and I think it was regular motorcycle oil 10W40. I  Went to the dealer and bought full syn oil 20W50 &  K&N oil filter .  There is a huge difference when the bike starts..as in it starts a lot easier.  Especially on a cold morning.  It also seems to run a lot cooler!  The temp gauage doesn't seem to go over the halfway mark even after sitting in traffic.  I couldn't be happier about it.  Yes Full Syn. is more expensive...I think I paid $6.75 per quart, but I feel it was totally worth it.

Now about the air filter.  I honestly didn't think to check it until I called the original owner and asked him when the last time he cleaned it was.  His reply..."Never, since he put the K&N in...2 years ago.  So without checking it, I saw one on ebay for cheap...I ordered it.  When I took the old one out....it was the ugliest thing I've ever seen....worse than michael jackson!!!!!  As soon as I replaced it I took it for a spin...and the throtle response was much much better.  I haven't really paid attention too much to the gas milage too much because I get free petrol (I work for the industry), but I'm sure it's better.

Note....The bike didn't take the new filter in too well until I adjusted the idle.  I had to lower the idle for the bike to "agree" with the filter.  Sounds weird, but maybe she was just used to reving hi in order to get more air in because of a dirty filter?....I'll see if I can find the pic of the air filter, since I live in AZ, durring summer time there is a lot of dust storms!  An air filter"s worst nightmare.

So nobody has had to rejet after installing the K&N? I'm in the same boat as XXCBRChrisXX.. I have a Vance&Hines 4-2-1 exhaust and was wanting to get a K&N. I didn't know if adding both would require a re-jet. On my ninja250. Everybody from that forum said you'd have to re-jet for anything added on. I think it was bull crap. Because I put an exhaust on it without re-jetting(it actually ran better!). Then I took the airbox out and replaced it with UNI pod filters (Then I had to rejet). But I remember somebody posting before that the hurricanes are tuned pretty rich from the factory. Does anyone know for sure?

One thing I love and hate about my bike...is the fuel gauge.  I love the fact that it has one...I hate how it's not right all time.  I get about 160 per tank...but my fuel indicator says I'm empty...and really I have over a gallon left.

Check PM inbox...in regards to Petrol.

and what is a half tank one day is something else the next, but it's not that bad, not like a car, where if you run out of gas, that's it, on the bike, there's always reserve.
