I just got a 98 CBR 600 that doesn't run, so I'm working on cleaning the carbs and gas tank, and am hoping to have it running by next weekend. Well, the other day I sat down on it to shift through some gears and get a feel for the bike in anticipation of the day I get it running, but afterwards I couldn't get it back into neutral. I've tried rolling it around as I shift and tried from 1st to neutral and from 2nd to neutral, but it just goes right from 1st to 2nd or vice versa. If I have the clutch all the way out and try to roll it forward until the engine stops the bike and then slowly shift from 1st towards neutral, it will reach a point during the shifting where the bike will roll freely, but then if I back off it will drop back into first, and if I keep going it will jump right into 2nd.

Does this mean there's some kind of transmission problem? Usually worn-out transmissions won't stay in gear, right? I'm hoping once the bike is running, I'll be able to get into neutral when the engine as some pressure on the transmission, but does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks guys.
