i have a 88 hurricane, and have a slight problem. it will run perfect sometimes, and then other times it will spudder like its not getting enough gas. sometimes when i am at a stop light it will die, and then i start it and it spudders. i will let it sit and then it will work fine. i had the carbs synched, plugs changed, fuel filter changed, air filter changed, i cant figure this out. anyhelp will be appreciated. you guys are so helpful on this forum. thank you.

look upstream... fuel tank for any rust, fuel petcock screen clogged, fuel pump may or may not be pumping all the time.

how do you check if the fuel pump is working? and how do you check the petcock screen.

to see the petcock screen you will have to remove it from the fuel tank. meaning, drain the tank, and unscrew it from the bottom. there will be a cilundrical tube about the length of a pen, that may be dirty. when you turn the key in the ignition the fuel pump should 'pump', put your hand on it and feel it it is pumping. if you are starting your bike, you should be able to feel it too.

I dont think my reserve is working...would that be an actual "switching" problem?

the petcock is pretty much the only thing you can look at to determine why the reserve isn't working. remove it from the tank and take the filter screen out. twist the knob back and forth to see if the reserve portion of the valve is actually letting fluid by. is it stuck or is it damaged? you'll have to find out. i don't even know if the petcocks are rebuildable. hmmm....
