Definitely don't run it. If a rod turns loose you're looking at possible MAJOR damage..... rod, crank, possibly piston slams into head while valve open and warps valve and/or damage head, etc., etc. check it NOW while its still capable of runing, you'l be glad you did.

Hey guys!  Thanks for the advice and bringing this post back from the dead!  But in the two years since that post, I ended up selling the bike and bought an '03 R6...which I later ended up selling and now I have an '06 Triumph Daytona 675.

That '96 was my first bike and I will never forget my roots!!

LOL!!!  I never even looked at the original post date.  That is too funny.  shoemjay, the CCT is the Cam Chain Tensioner.  They go out every so often and it sounds like a marble bouncing around in the top end of the engine.  The noise happens when the engine is cold and goes away for the most part once the engine is warmed up.

Wow.. well theres a good reason this post came back from the dead. I bought a 98 f3 this tuesday. was riding home on a local road and the engine died, much similar to Turtle's. I listened to the wav file and lo and behold, my engine is making the same ticking noise. I had started a new thread without even bothering to check for similar content already up so any1 that wants specifics can read it. "New bike problems" is the title of the post. What exactly was the origin of the tick? My mechanic seems to think that it maybe also be a spark plug wire shorted out and going to ground on the engine or somewhere internally on the bike.
