Well just like cars, bikes were governed to certain velocities. What happens is that once you've achieved a programed velocity, either the engine is at risk of damage or the bike has simply reached it's "governer" and will either stall(turn off) or bog down(decelerate suddenly). The reason why most vehicles and motorcycles have been governed now in days is simply to not be able to outrun police...there are many reasons why, such as engine damage, wheels desintegrating and lack of control, but mainly cause cops don't want you to get away. OH, and before I go....FYI, there are ways to override "governers", each app. is different though.

I have a 99 900RR, and I've never had it shut down like that. As far as I know, there is no governor on it. I believe 260km is about 160mph, which it should go well over that at least on the speedometer.

new bikes are speed limited to 186mph, for $30 you can buy a limiter tricker. the limiter works like this: the bike shuts down when it reaches a certain rpm in 6th gear. the tricker makes the bike think it is still in 5th gear, therefore bypassing the limiter.

You need a fuel pump all or i should say most cbr need help above 150-160 to keep the fuel flowing to the carbs, it all has to do with gravity most cbr's are gravity feed so on the top-end they fall on there face put a fuel pump in see what happens.. And i dont think any 900 ever had a governer on it.

Some new bikes like the hyabusa have a gps tracking system, but they do it for warrantee purposes. If the bike hits 186 it informs the dealer and the driver owner receives a call an hour later telling him his warrantee is void. I know it happened to my freind on a cruise we made. On an other note the 900 does have a fuel pump, at list mine does. Mabe the fuel pump is'nt working properly, it does sound like a fuel problem. Johnny

i recently put a 98 engine in a 95 cbr. everytime i got up in a wheelie it would cut out. i removed the fuel pump and put a direct (gravity fed) line in, cured the problem. don't know if yours has a fuel pump, but if it does, get rid of it.
