You can try a simple set of earbuds but I don't know if you'll be able to hear them over the wind/road noise. I have permanently installed speakers in both my helmets and wear the disposible foam type ear plugs and can hear music fine. Yes, I can also hear other things like sirens, horns, etc. It's kind of like sitting in a quiet room with music playing at a low volume.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of a permanent install you might try some earplug/headphones. These are earplugs that have a tiny speaker in them. Supposedly they work well but, they are pricey. One brand that I know of is:http://store.yahoo.com/earplugstore/er6isearbyet.html

i took my earpads out, placed earbuds in the helmet, then reinstalled the earpads over them with the cord running down the back of the helmet. you can hear your music and road noises. i know its cheap, but its also removable.

I ride with my Etymotic ER4p earplugs all the time. The are basically foam earplugs with a very high quality driver inside. Block 25+ dB of noise, and have wonderful sound. Since you can't hear much on a motorcycle anyways, they work great, and I keep them low volume, so I save my ears and can still hear the ocassional siren. Not cheap though.... www.etymotic.com

You should wear some sort of hearing protection while riding (that is, if you like being able to hear)
