my 1990 cbr will only start when it wants to it has a new battery on and turns over ok
if it wont start it always bumps straight away
can anybody point me in the rirht direction

bump starts?  get yourself a manual and test the voltage regulator/rectifier.

it wont start at all today. i took a spare plug and earthed it to the engine then turned it over there is no spark at all

how is the voltage on the battery?  is it charged at all, or is it low?  my guess is still with the reg/rec until you test it.

I agree with rrasco, i had the same issue on an older bike.

you need three main ingredients -> air, fuel & spark
one doesn't work without the others
