i'm in the market for a 954rr.. i went to check one out this past weekend from a private seller. after checking out the bike the seller tells me he does not allow test rides. he then pulls out this bill of sale document which states that buyer will buy bike contingent on it passing a 30 minute test ride AFTER this document is signed.

in essence, u pay for the bike upfront presuming all is ok and if it checks out after the ride then everything stays (u with the bike & your money with the seller); but if bike is not to your liking then all money will be returned and of course bike is returned in same condition.

has anyone ever done a purchase like this or heard of it before??

I've heard about it but never done it , I always buy new so I can let someone else worry about fixing the little stuff for a while.
I think the main reason for this is , let say he gives you a test drive and you total his bike and you don't have the cash to cover buying the bike.
It just covers his ass.

yeah i realized it was a c.y.b (cover your butt) measure, but was just curious what experience anyone else had with this or if they have even heard of it before?

i think the bike is probably in good shape. i inspected it closely and listened to it run for a while too. i'm just anxious to finally get one.. & was really disappointed when i got there & the guy tells me no test ride.

Most people selling a used bike won't let someone take it for a test ride. They will have some contract like you saw stating that if you ride it and reck it, you bought it.

risk versus reward my friend...if it is a great price might be worth the risk...also would just give him a check...you can always do a stop payment for $20...no risk really

i bought my 600rr in a similar manner. the guy didn't allow test rides. i came with a cashier's check for the amount of the bike and made payable to the seller and showed it to him to let him know i was a serious buyer.... but i kept it until AFTER he let me take it for a spin to make sure all was good (which it was). it was a smooth transaction. good luck with everything!

just to reiterate whats already been said, i also bought my bike the same way. we didnt have any contract or anything, i just gave the guy my cash to hold onto and had a friend test drive the bike (i didnt know how to ride at the time). overall, really smooth transaction. if you're uncomfortable, take someone with you to make sure dude doesnt just close the garage and turn off the lights the second you leave and then the wheels fall off the bike.

When i bought mine i didn't bring money, just signed a contract basiclly saying i will pay for damages if any occur or will buy the bike. Something like that, can't remember exactly what it said. Worked out fine. Bought the bike like a week later. Got a great deal, IMO.
