Hey Guys I have a 93 900RR. It's got 2mm over pistons and stock cams with a ported head. Also has a jet kit. I was told about 150 jets in the carbs. Also running a 2 bros header with just a dump on it. Recently it has become hard to start. Also a couple times I have turned it off after riding and go to start it back up about 5-10 mins later and it wouldnt start. Just cranked without a sign of it trying to start. What do you guys think it is?

Oh and what is the proper way to turn it off? I always used the kill switch but my buddy told me the other day I should use the key? Is there a difference?

There is no difference, the kill switch or the ignition both cut the curcuit. I found that after I put a jet kit on my 900 I didn't need to use the choke anymore and it is more sensetive to starting it. I have to start it with no throtle. Johnny

Hmm Ok. Also If I start it up in the morning with it choked it does like to pop and shoot a little flame out the pipe with it choked...

Got a few ?s about this dumped exhaust;

Does it have any sort of baffle?
How much louder than an aftermarket pipe is it?
Was the engine tuned (jets and such) with this dumped setup?

If it's popping and shooting flames out with the choke on, try it without the choke. Sounds like it's getting too much fuel exiting your exhaust ports, igniting on the headers rather than in the cylinder.

That could possibly be the problem trying to restart; too much fuel left in (flooded). I'm no expert mechanic, but I'd check to see how rich you're running.

Straight header with a tip dumping it so no baffle at all. So yes Very loud. I am in the process of switching over to a full Micron system, also I found a couple burnt gaskets so that may have been leading to my popping also. As far as I know it was tuned with the dumped exhaust on it. And yes it does settle the popping down with the choke off and it also pops when I let off of the throttle. My plan is to throw some new plugs in it (cheap Insurance) get the new exhaust on and see how it does. Then if there's still a problem take it for a dyno tune again with the new exhaust

If it's popping with the choke on and when you let off the throttle then you're definatly running rich.

Got any pix of this exhaust???

Ya its a pretty nice bike haha. Ok new problem though..Put the full Micron on and now it only idles around 1000 with the choke on, drops down and dies with the choke off and with the choke on if I try to crack the throttle it falls on its face, it needs a slow hit of the gas. Rejetting needed, I'm guessing it needs to drop a little fuel off the table to get it to go right?

Great picture man, the bike looks great!

Did you mess around with your idle control at all after putting on the micron exhaust?? The idle control knob should be on your lefthand mid fairing mount, right under the tank and frame. Start the bike and mess around with that for a minute, see if it helps at all.

Nope didn't touch a thing just got the exhaust up and tried to start it to check for leaks. Oh and small detail it's only like 35-40 degrees out right now around here..

I would play with the idle control just to see what it will do.

As far as the "cold", don't even worry about it. In past years, I've driven year-around as long as the roads were clear. I live in Minnesota and we have many months that stay below 20 degrees consecutively.

Well whether the weather is cold or not I'm still having a starting issue. Haha. What I have noticed though is if I but the battery tender on for a second it does try to start a bit easier..I'm going to try to get the gas tank up and and the air box off to chech a plug or 2
