This is a common problem for ANY motorcycle since the shift from 1st to 2nd has the longest throw and over time the shift fork can bend, wear, and it affects the shift drum and maybe a gear or two...the parts are not the expensive part of the repair, the labor is what will kill you. The motor has to come out and be dissassembled completely, the transmission is the 1st part that goes in when building the motor and the last to come out when taking it apart..very time consuming. If you buy another motor, there is no way to know exactly if you are getting the same problem unless you have x-ray vision. You can find motors on Ebay if you want, but I would reccomend fixingthe one you got so that you are sure that you are not buying someone elses problem

Did you get the new trans installed? If so, how long did it take what tools/manuals did you use? I've got the same problem. Thanks for any help.

I have the same problem you described, second pops out into neutral although only under hard acceleration so the bikes still ridable. I've been told I need a new second gear and was quoted $1600 to do it. Is a manual enough or is there another book you recommend? Thanks.

1600 is very cheap, i got told 2500, but i fixed it myself. a claymor manual is good enough, i dont think its the gear, i beleave its the shift fork, when i did mine the fork was messed up very bad, the gears where still in very good shape. just be sure to get the book before you start the job, and have alot of time to do it. good luck. if you have any questions e mail me phantom09086@yahoo.com and i will try to help you out the best i can.

hi, i also have a 96 f3 I notice the same problem developing on my bike. To fix the problem is it simple and getting the clymers manual and just going through step by step? And is it possible to do the job with basic shop tools? I have time, and I really want to do the work myself because its good to know. Thanks
