I used to work at a dealership and have seen a mechanic do a 2.5hr book clutch job in 25 mins from on lift to off lift, so I know HOW the book system works, I just don't have the book.

If I had someone to show me HOW to do valves I would've done that myself.  Otherwise I think I could have fumbled through the rest....how hard can it be, right?

Labor rate in Green Bay Wi is $85. Like most shops if you bring in your own parts for anything it goes higher, usually to $100 or so.

You must be going to Team...?...check out Naef Cycle....Ken will take good care of you.

aside from all the bs hours you got charged...here to get valve clearance checked...it's a flat fee for $300 plus...and doesn't include TB synching nor getting valves to spec. ripping everything off to get to the valves doesn't take very long if you've been working with the bike, but it's the actual shimming that sucks. the shim under bucket is a total pita. at local shops here, just for valves and adjustments alone would run over $400 already.

given that...price for everything that was done for bird's bike, if it comes out to less than $500 isn't bad...for a dealer...

but had he done it himself...that's like 2 trackdays in his pocket.

im in the same boat as you man i got to have my valves ajusted soon and im going to have to bring it to the shop to have it done becuase i have never ajusted valves. the 3 things i let the shop do are valves, chain, tires. every thing else i do my self.

chain is easy, let the shop mount the tires, nothing more...
valves...it's actually not so bad...just a lot of work to do but not so bad (checking clearance)...now if you need to adjust then it gets a bit more arduous. i haven't had to shim the bike yet, but as far as checking clearance, it's fairly straight forward.

I figure it was an easy decition since 16k service was like $450 or so parts and labor.  I said THAT was a heck of a deal.  I got treated quite well from them too.  Aside from a grippe here and there on parts (~$30 bux worth), it's all good (not including the labor issue).  Just want to have my ducks in a row when I go in to the dealership.  Anyone have a shop manual with labor rates that I could access online?

All you need are a couple of box wrenches and the guide on your chain adjuster.

Yes, a tool is needed to cut the chain.

For anyone looking for answers, a 16k service does NOT include TB sync.  It's not even on the chart.  I should have checked my service manual before going into the dealership.

At what point does Honda recommend this be done...ever?  I know Suzuki has it in their manual.  I guess Honda is bullet proof, huh?

Hmmmm....Service Manual pp 5-64 says that the TBs are factory pre-set painted with white dot and do not require adjustment.  I'm scratching my head.  Can anyone comment on that?

 Over

So Honda denies its need?  Even Ramazuki tells techs to do it.

At the risk of sounding like a smarta$$, didn't you get a written estimate prior to the job?  It seems a little backwards to have them do the work and then complain it is too high if you did not know how much it was going to be in the first place.  Again, not trying to be a smarta$$...:)

I shopped around, but did not get a written estimate of all the things I wanted done.  I took some of the things for granted and made my decison based on major service.  Didn't think about the "little" things adding up.

Better to be a smart a$$ than a dumb a$$.  I've been the latter in this case.
But alas, she sent me an email detailing a refund on parts prices.
