I own a 99 F4 since it first came out. I always wondered what the F in F4 stands for. I called a bunch of Honda dealerships and they didn't know. My guess is formula. Anyone know for sure.

I did a search...and the first question should be what does CBR stand for.

No one seems to know...

I do...

IT STANDS FOR FOUR AS IN FOUR CYLINDER. I believe this designation started in the early or mid seventies when some CB models had the same displacement but one model was a twin and the other a four.

Here's my guess.  I think that the CBR F4 stands for:

CB, I not sure what the CB truly means, but it's from the original bike, the 1969 CB750 Four.  The Four was later shortend in the seventies to the CB750F.  The F stands for Four cyclinder.  Then the R (Race, Racer or something like that) was added with the intoduction of the 1987 CBR600F, or the Hurricane.  The F2, F3, F4, F4i (injected) are the engine generations of the Four cyclinder 600 series.  I dunno, just a guess.

The F does not stand for FOUR, or anything like that. The F is a designation that honda assigned to the bike. The first CBR F1 was designed to meet the wants of the average street rider and those that want to open it up on the weekends at the racetrack. Honda wanted to find that perfect blend of trackbike and streetbike. The CBR for some years was the perfect match for both type of riders until
Yamaha in the late 90's came out with three different bikes, the R6 streetbike, R6 supersport, and the R6 sporttourer. Three different bikes for three different types of riders while honda only had one bike and the was the F4. To compete with Yamaha honda revamped the F4 and came out with the F4I which had better handling, fuel injection, and internals mods. For these reasons the new F41 is no longer honda's choice for a race ready bike and the 600RR was introduce some time ago. Honda saw that poeple wanted a bike that was built for the track and they gave it to the people. Hope this history lesson clears everything up.

CB is the engine designation of an inline 4, R was added later when they started to produce a race replica for the mass market and the technologies learned from the race tracks, hence CBR the "F"came from I believe the F1 racing back in the day, F-4 means 4th generation of the F series, F4i is 4th gen with Fuel injection hence the "i"

The F stands for 4 cylinder as there were models with the SAME DISPLACEMENT but some were twins and some were 4's.
