Great job.  Nice write up.  How is the handling compared to the 1000F front end?  Also, did you put on the Blackbird front brakes?

I've noticed no differences in handling, at least up to normal cruising speed (100kmh / 60mph). Haven't yet done any high speed runs, but I try to get some air strip runs this summer to check it out. Also I tried coming down some steep hills with no hands on bars, bike remained solid and didn't start to bend in any direction.

Brakes are original 1000F brakes. I thought of changing front fender to 1100XX fender, but I think it looks now just fine. I actually tried to get hold of 1100XX mirrors, but couldn't find them second hand anywhere, and they're damn expensive if bought brand new. Current LED front blinkers are easy to remove without a scratch if I get those XX mirrors cheap somewhere. There's also some planning for installing XX back fairing, but that won't happen until next winter.

Thanks for all comments!

Hi Kaasari and welcome back! You´ve done an awesome job! I don´t remember, but didn´t you need some repairs yourself? Anyway, I hope you´re OK! About those´Bird mirrors, weird thing that 1000F-mirrors is available as aftermarket parts, but not the Blackbirds mirrors!
Just want to tell you, I saw an fellow countryman of yours (I mean finnish) with a CBR 1000F -99 (red) here were I live last summer, I ripped my helmet off and went to talk to them, sadly they didn´t speak swedish and very poor english. Managed to understand that they were coming back from a long trip, think they said Italy...

Hi and thanks! You did remember right, I had couple bones broken and few scratches, collar bone needed some metal to keep it together. I'm now 100% recovered, only nice scars remind me of that crash. But when looking back, I'm incredibly lucky to survived with such a minor damage, as that crash had all elements to be fatal. Anyway, looking forwards in life, not backwards!

Those 1000F mirrors are probably easier to find because they're used also in other Honda bikes (CBR600F, CBR900RR and VFR atleast) of that same era, as Blackbird mirrors are for Blackbird exclusively.

I think it's common route for finnish bikers to ride through Sweden when heading to central or southern Europe, so expect us Finns invading your roads again this summer, hopefully I'm along them!

Nice to hear you recovered! If you have the route passing Mora in Sweden, make sure you stop at my Club´s Motorcycle Camp to stay the night, our camp fee is cheaper than air(almost)! That is if you´re goin´ to Sweden this summer. Post when and I´ll make sure I´ll be there! About those mirrors: actually, they seem (compairing pictures) to be mounted on the legendary NR 750, but that doesn´t make them more available

Kaasari,

Do you still have the original plastics off of your bike or is that the reason that you did this swap?  i just layed mine down and need some plastics.

Sorry, original front fairing was pretty much destroyed in that crash, I have bits of it left, but they're way too damaged to be used again. What plastics you need?

Great to see such imagination being put into good use.  Fantastic result to give the bike a new lease of life.  Let us know how it ride and if you find and handling changes.

Kaasari,

I would like some more pictures if you have them.  I wrecked mine and am thinking about this swap.  I'll PM you my email so you can send the pics directly to me.

Got your email, I'll send you pics next weekend when I get back to my home computer.

So far I've runned my bike up to +200kmh / +125mph and alot of twisty roads, bike still feels very solid and smooth, so I'm now sure this swap was total success and didn't generate any negative handling effects. I'm still interested in testing how this swap has affected aerodynamics (read: top speed), there's atleast one air strip event near my home this summer, so hopefully I can get there to check it out.

Took the bike to air strip last Sunday. It managed to do 240kmh / 150mph in distance of 1.8km's / 1.1miles. I was very satisfied with the result, I felt the bike was still accelerating at the finish line, but it would need another mile or so to reach it's top speed.

They tried to make a Guinness world record into gategory of "Fastest bike under 1000cc + NOS distance 1 mile" with modified ZX-9R Kawa. Unfortunately it reached 290kmh's at 4th gear before engine blew up. Because it was quite a hot day, I counted at least 5 bikes with major mechanical problems, none of them was Honda.

Days fastest was not-so-suprisingly turboed Hayabusa with 350kmh / 218mph.  Fastest stock ZZR1400 Kawa reached 295kmh / 183mph. Interestingly they used Vbox-GPS -system with that Hayabusa to give accurate result, police radar gun they used to measure other bikes gave "only" 322kmh / 200mph for the Busa.

First pic is that ZX-9R Kawa ready to launch. Second pic is my bike in attack mode (mirrors stripped and body strenghtened with bullet-proof duct tape), third pic is me at around finish line (pic courtesy of rhead.1g.fi) and last pic is quick snapshot at the start point. Great fun overall!

I'm flabbergasted!
The results you are reporting are wonderful! It is really remarkable how the design and function seem to work so very well in your hands.
I think I've told you this before: your bike is a peace of art.
