To the OP:

No matter what I or anyone else has to say, you're the one who has to live with your decision at the end of the day.
Power is a concern, but not the only one. It seems that a big factor has been left out: Geometry of the bike's setup. The RR's, GSX-R's, R6's etc etc have an unforgiving geometry. Shorter wheel bases and steeper fork rake.

My advise: If you're dead set on a 600cc sport bike, go for it. Just limit it to a few choices. One would be the katana 600, the CBR F4 (99-00), or the CBR F4i (injected 01-06). Not the best starter bikes, but fairly easy to handle and forgiving to most, but not all, rider mistakes.

Oh, and also be sure to get and actually read: "A Twist of the Wrist" Vol. 2 by Keith Code. Best $20 you'll ever spend on bike related stuff. All the bullshit mods won't gain you anything, but this book will.

Also, proficient Motorcycling by David L. Hough is also a great book for a first timer.

Wow! I never read that much in my 5yrs of college, but am glad I have. I guess you could call me a semi-idiot. I just bought a 07 600RR as my first sport bike, but I have been racing around on 250cc and 450cc dirt bikes for a while, so I'm not new to two wheels. I will say this though, if you have never been on a bike and are looking at getting a 600cc for your first, you better have some good health insurance.
Thanks for all the great posts. I'm definitely going to check out the books.

You want the sportbike look without the skill to ride it check out these bikes. No they are no honda or yamaha but they make a modern "looking" 250cc bike that should be great for you to learn on but still have that 2007 sportbike look so you seem "cool" to all your friends.

I've heard some pretty bad horror stories about those Hyosung bikes. Enough that I wouldn't buy one.

thankskmazz....not really worried about the "cool" factor..I have my Cobra for that. my cousin has one of those 650R's i think it is. He got it a couple years ago and likes it. said its had a couple minor issue's but been fine.

in my own opinion for my first bike ever I bought a 600f4i. Never rode before in my life. Only rode dirt bike quads and stuff like that but never owed any of my own so nerve rode that much. I was fine on the f4i had no problem rode it for two years and I loved the thing. Not only that but I learned very quickly on it. I was burnin in no time. and for you that know the area around me if rode rt301 your lucky you made down the damm rode cuase alot of people dont. So ne ways I just bought a 06 600rr and I love that thing a little different from my f4i but still love it. In my own opinion a bike will only go as fast as you want it too. The only thing is you get those idoits that get on there first bike and think they know how ride those are the ones that crash. It take time to learn how to ride and the more you ride the better you'll get
