Hey there everyone. I just got my '07 CBR 1000RR two weeks go, and I thought I'd ask a couple n00b questions.

About where on the rev band do you keep it when you're just cruising on the freeway? For max fuel economy without lugging the engine, I mean. I've been thinking, 5000 RPM sounds about right, so I'll down/ upshift until I'm about there.

Second, does anyone else's ride just plain suck when the engine temp tops 210 degrees? Is this normal? If I'm pulling 225+ when it's only 95 out, in stop and go traffic, I'm thinking I'll be over 250 once it's July in Arizona. Any strategies you recommend for keeping the engine temp a little lower, or do I just have to deal?

Third, in first gear, I don't have that much power below 19 mph, and then BAM, I get smacked in the ass by the seat as the engine breaks 3800 RPM. I was told by a questionable source that this will even out as the bike gets broken in, and that 0 to 20 mph will get a bit quicker, though never as fast as 20 to 40 mph. Is this true, because at present, it seems like a jerky transition over the 19 mph mark.

Well, just keep it in 5th or 6th at hwy speeds really. Anything over 3k isn't going to lug the engine.

Can't really say about the engine temp as I don't commute with mine, so I'm never in stop and go. Just riding twisties or whichever usually keeps it at about 180-185. Although after a ride I was playing with the engine idle speed in the driveway and saw temp go to about 220 then the fan kicked in. Anything over 240 and I'd start to worry lol.

The engine will always be about the same, even after break in. Idle-3000 rpm is nothing for a sportbike. No magic happens there. Although, if I'm in first accelerating slowly and easily I've noticed that there is a boost in torque right at about 3k rpm. Just when the engine starts to build noticable power. It also turns on again at about 6k rpm, but is more smooth power delivery than some other sportbikes. Just how they are really.

do the flapper mod. this will help with the pre-3000rpm lag in power. that, along with a few mods (power commander with a good map, air filters (not k&n), exhaust) and this bike will scream at any rpm.

5500+ is when the upper injectors kick in so yea if ya shift below that level, you'll experience better fuel economy ... i keep mine between 3500 & 5500 when just tooling around

+1 on Demon RR's suggestion of the flapper mod (http://www.rogueracing.org/flap.htm)

but you could one step further and do your own Poor Man's Intake (look it up on www.1000rr.net) where you remove all the offending grates/doors/passages for one clean, smooth intake
you could also upgrade to BMC Race filters since they'll let more air into the motor and a little more power

later on, you could throw out the stock 16/42 gearing and get a full 520 conversion kit (15/43 on mine)
might want to buy a SpeedoHealer along with the 520 package to compensate for the change in gearing

For fuel economy, just as the owners manual suggest, shift around 2000 rpm.  For brisk riding, shift at 3000+.

I usually stick around 4000 rpm and I get about 130 miles before I get the low fuel light (with the occasional high revving fun moments)

Don't worry about the temperature being at 225. You will notice that the fan doesn't kick on until it gets to that temperature (place your right hnd by the mid cowling vent and you will feel it when its on). I am getting that in the 85 degree Alabama weather.

on a side note, how do you like Arizona? I have often thought of moving there. I would like to hear an opinion from a local.

Hey you could try Redline Water Wetter and just plain water.  I dunno about the anti-corrosion abilities of water wetter(read captions) and maybe get some anti rust additives too.  But anyways water wetter and water transfer heat much faster then glycol antifreeze.  Or try hardwiring your fans on a toggle that you could control....

ok i leave in florida, the bike will get hot in stop and go, its the nature of the beast, and as some1 noted the fan will kick right around 225 and i think ive seen 226 but it hovers right around there. buying a new fan is not paramount, if i catch a red light i turn off the bike to save gas and heat. I will say the flapper mod helps with the stand still accel. I have yet to get an aftermarket filter.
These bikes are like a gun pulling the trigger is the slow part :)
