I have had better evenings.... Just got done pushing my bike over 10 blocks. So I was cruising on the freeway, hit the off ramp, for some reason decide to hold in the clutch and not down shift to a complete stop. Just before coming to the stop the bike just died, no fluctuating idle, nothing. It has about 1/2 tank of gas. I did smell an electrical burning smell coming from the right side of the bike, just under the seat. Bike would not start, no crank, would not bump start for the life of me. After pushing it about 5 blocks, tried to start it again, and it started to crank slowly and then stopped. Seems like there is a starter solenoid or something on the right side where the smell is coming from. This happened to me in my driveway about a week ago, and finally started after I let it sit for the day. Any ideas would be fantastic. Thanks.

Thanks for the response mitch81. An update this morning. It would not crank over, but was able to bump start. It died in about 15 seconds, like lost electrical power, would not bump start. Came back 3-4hours later bump started it and drove it about 8 blocks before it died and would not restart again. Almost seems like starter solenoid for starting issue, but something else for when it dies. Almost like it needs to cool completely off to run again. dunno.

my money is on your voltage regulator/rectifier. mine went and i saw it smoke from the same place you described. the reg is positioned right in front underneath of the battery. all the symptons you are describing implicate the reg/rec. ha, i have pushed my bike more than 10 blocks. many more, in full gear, and 100*.
