I am in the process of purchasing a 2001 929 rr the bike has 6,400 miles in it and its yellow with black. I just sold my katana and really like this Honda, b/c its beautiful but when I rode it I hear a small little sound like if it comes from the engine. So the mechaninc tells me it's normal is that sound normal or not. Because the mechanic happens to be a friend of the guy I am trying to purchase the bike from. Also the bike is for $5,000 is that a good or bad deal?

it is possible that it is the HTEV. it is a valve that is after the header. in my opinion it is a draw back to the bike. first it is a rattely son of a gun and second because i have heard that you can remove and replace it safely with a straight piece. you can find it online i've seen it. i have heard that by removing it you my increase 6-7 hp but personally i do not beleive that. it may be something else i dont know i havent checked out the bike. well good luck and 5k is pretty good get the bike.

I bought the same bike, same color with 4,958 miles for 5,800.00. The price is good for you but there should be no knocking. Have the bike looked at by a local Honda dealership. If there is nothing wrong with it, the seller should have no problem letting you have someone else look at it. The bike could have been dogged out big time. The blue/red book lists the bike for a lot higher than 5,000.00 so be weary. A few bucks now will save you weeks if not months of heartache and pain down the road! Keep huggin'!

get a compression test done on the bike. short of tearing the engine down, that is the best way to see if its holding compression. i have owned hondas since 1990. my 1000rr ticks. its normal. the ticking is in the valve train. not the HTEV. if it really worries you get the valves adjusted and see how it does.

just my .02

its hard to diagnose a problem over the internet. take it to the shop and let them look at it.
