I've always hated the turn signals on most bikes. To me, an new bike shouldn't have turn signals that look like the belong on an 80s bike.A buddy of mine recently bought an 07 GSXR 750. Upon seeing the bike, I noticed that the turn signals were integrated into the front of the mirror housings. I thought this was a great idea and decided to make them fit my bike. I picked up a brand new pair I found on Craig's list for $80. Here's the first issue I ran into:

The stock mirror mounts by 2 allen screws that go in from the top through the mirror base into the cowl. The GSXR mirrors mount with 2 studs. On the Suzuki there must be 2 nuts that fasten onto the studs from underneath. They were too short to pass all the way through the aluminum frame supporting the cowl and windscreww so I decided to remove them. They simply unscrew with a wratchet and deep 6 pt socket.

Removing the fairings.

The stock front signals mount to the fairings. The fairings are relatively simple to remove, only being held on by allen screws and ratainer clips. Take your time and make sure you remove each screw and clip. The ones in front of the radiator can be a bit tricky to see. There are 2 types of retaining clips: one that you simply push the inside in to release them, the second need to be unscrewed. I used a stubby phillips screw driver on those. The below pic has the approximate locations of screws and clips circled in yellow. Note that the ones going up the leading edge of the fairing are on the INSIDE. There are also 2 on the bottom front of the bike where the fairings meet as well as 4 under the headlight. The right side of the bike is the same. As you pull the fairing carefully away from the bike disconnect the stock turn signal connectors. The right side is blue, the left is orange. After you have the fairings off an the turn signal wires disconnected, lay them down carefully and unbolt the stock signals from the back side. This leaves an unsightly hole. We'll deal with this later.

Wiring the connectors:
Stock turn signal connector. It has 3 wires. 2 are powers and 1 is ground. The stock setup uses the front signals as running lights as well. Since the GSXR signals had only 2 wires and I decided that I didn't care to have them work as running lights as well, I only wired them up to signal. The green wire is the ground. The two blues are powers. I bent back the blue wire with the stripe and used some heat shrink over it so it wouldnt short anything out.

I also thought about swapping out the internals between the two signals, but it wouldnt work. Here are the differences: The stock signal uses a dual element bulb while the GSXR uses a single.

Making the turn signal harnesses:

I don't like to rig anything nor use butt connectors where stuff might get wet, so I soldered and heat shrunk everything.  I used marine heat shrink as it has an adhesive that melts when heated and makes a watertight seal. I cut the connectors off the stock signals and and soldered them onto the GSXR ones so that they would plug right in. Again you want the solid blue wire as power and the green for the ground. Technically polarity doesn't mater when you mate them to the 2 signal wires. On the left side of the bike the wires or orange, orange with white tracer, and green. You want the solid orange and green for power and ground. Tape off the other orange wire.

Mounting the mirrors with the integrated signals

Since there was no easy way to make the studs on the gsxr mirrors work, I removed them and decided to secure the mirrors by running bolts up from underneath the cowl. The cowl support has threaded inserts for the stock mirros to bolt to. I chose to drill all the way through these. First I removed the cowl. This is done by removing the screws that go around the windscreen.

There are two electrical connectors that need to be undone. The first is on the back side of the instrument cluster(front of bike). The connector can be released by gently pulling back the rubber boot and pressing the release tab under the connector.

The second connector is on the left side of the bike (when sitting on it). Again, pull back the rubber boot and press in the release tab while gently pulling the connectors apart.

Carefully slide the cowl forward and off. Here is where the mirrors mount circled in yellow

I drilled those larger so that an m6 x 1.0 bolt would pass up through and screw into the mirror mounting plates. You want to drill slightly larger as the mounting points on the GSXR mirrors are slightly different.

Drill all the way through.  Since this is near the intake, I promptly cleaned up the metal shavings with a vacuum.

To have the mirrors mount flush, you will have to cut these raised portions off. I used a dremel witha  cut off wheel and then a sanding drum. Wear eye protection.

You want it to look like this when you are done

Next the holes in the cowl need to be enlarged. DO NOT simply try to drill them larger. I found out the hard way and put a nice crack in the cowl. I repaired it with jb weld from underneath for now, but will replace it in the near future. At least the majority of ther crack is under the mirror mounting base and hard to see. Use a dremel with a grinding stone similar to this and be careful. You might want to tape up the surrounding area in  case you slip.

Mount the cowl back on the bike. Run 2 long m6 x 1.0 bolts up from underneath through the aluminum cowl support, through the cowl, and into the mirror base. You're going to have to play around with it to line up the holes. The front bolt poses a bit of a problem as the aluminum there has a curve so it won't mount flush. Grinding it won't help much as the support is hollow. I chose to remedy this by using an extra long bolt and a washer. I cleaned up the appearance by putting  black vacuum cap over the bolt head.

You cna see in the pic above the front mounting bolt covered by the vacuum cap and the silver one just behind it. I may paint the silver bolt black in the future to conceal it further or find a different style bolt head. Plug in the signals and secure the wires somehow. I used black zip ties to keep them neat. Test out the signals
