I would think 954's should easily beat a 636.

If you got bit from the start, you probably just didn't ride the clutch enough.  The 954 is geared pretty tall in comparison to a 600, so if you just dropped the clutch at a low RPM, I could believe it.  Next time, keep the revs around 7g when you're launching and don't release the clutch till you're goin a good 30 or more.

If you got owned from a roll... I'm thinking you were just in the wrong gear.

When you are accelerating does the front of your bike start to lift off the ground even when your leaned forward all of the way? If this isn't happening you just need to give it more throttle and you will beat him. 600s have no low end power and need to be well over 10k rpm before they start pulling. Also im not sure what a 600 pulls in first but your bike should be about 80 ish.

Ooops my bad! Go to sportrider.com and look at tech and specs section. Those little kawi 600s are fast pulling into the 10s on 1/4. I won't under estimate them any more.

I had a kawasaki  zx6r and I own a 954rr and I would have to say that little 600 was a bad ass. The only difference I can tell between the 2 are torque. It is alot easier to launch a 600 than the 954. I could launch the 600 like a dirt bike. I am not that good with the 954 everytime I launch hard the thing wants to wheely and I have to back off.

i know my 929 will beat my brothers 636. also try shifting without the clutch. just put some pressure on the shift lever and blip off the throttle then get into your gear and back on the throttle in a nice smooth motion. that should deffinetly help you.
