I split the lanes alot, always at red lights and always when traffic is going slower then 65.... I try not to split any faster then 15mph though.... I've split the lanes by many CHP and Sherrifs on the freeway and theres been a couple incidents when I have even followed a CHP Motor Officer splitting the lanes....

from cali and i really dont split to get to the front of a red light. especially when im riding with others. had a buddy do it and gunned it as soon as the green dropped. and someone was trying to beat the yellow. so you can figure out what happened. plus i think that im never in a rush because i dont ride to work unlike most of my buddies. so do what you feel comfortable with. you should know where you all are headed. so what if you are 25 secs behind. ride safe

I have had the chance to ride in California and lane split several times. It is amazing how everyone sees the motorcycles and generally moves over. When my husband came to visit when we were dating years ago, he tried to lane split here in Ill and nearly got killed. When he told me I asked if he had death wish. Not only from the cars and their drivers but the condition of our roads, they are horrible. If a car is not trying to kill you, you will get lost forever in the deep dark black holes between lanes and sometimes in the lane. ...Keep the rubber side down

Very common practice in Cali, but illigal at that speed. Legally you can split traffic is going less 30 -25 miles/hour. And your speed splitting can't be over 25 or something like that... it was a question on the DMV written test. But I split lanes all the time and various speeds when it's safe to do so. And yes there are really cool people out there that do move over and some who are jealous that you're on a bike and they're sitting in traffic and block you. And of course there are those on the C-Phone who are too busy look before they change lanes. So it's a risk, but we know that.

My question is how legal is it to move in and out of the car pool lane on the bike. When I'm in the car, I see riders pass people in the car pool lane... they go out to pass and come back in... and I've seen motorcops do it also.

If your splittin lanes I don't think cops really care. After talking with a few officers about splitting lanes they don't like to see you weaving in and out of lanes. Also say that traffic is going 40mph in a 60mph zone you can travel at 50mph and be legal. They give you 10mph over the flow of traffic not to exceed the posted limit.

Thanks, that's good to know. That's worth about a few hundred!
