I am a new rider this summer, just over 1000 miles on my 89 CBR 600.  I commute 120 miles round trip into Sacramento and on my way home today I had guy pass me (I gave him the right side of my lane) and then he proceeded to split cars at 75-80 miles an hour.  Is this a common practice?  I still feel uncomfortable spliting to get up to the front at a red light.  It could just be me and my inexperience.  Let me know.

only legal in CA.... so most of us shouldn't know.

I lane share in OH all the time and have done the occasional lane split.  It depends on how comfortable you are and it's alway risky.

Splitting lanes just to get to the front at a red-light is an extreme d-bag move.  Besides that, I'm all for lane-splitting on traffic-jammed highways.

I'm pretty sure that even in California what this guy did was illegal.  You're allowed to split when traffic is moving very slow, like below 20 mph, and your speed shouldn't exceed the speed of traffic by more than 10 mph (I may be off on the exact numbers, but you get the idea).

Splitting is illegal here, but I do it when traffic is at or near a standstill, which is most of the time.  That, and how easy it is to find parking, are the main reasons to ride here in NYC.

^^^  +1 on NYC lane splitting.  I'd have died from heat exhaustion a long time ago if I didn't split a few lanes here and there.  [;)]

I'm not sure that it is a d-bag move.  Pretty much ever rider up my way does it.  When I first started riding I wouldn't do it.  Then I would get passed by a bike or two that were heading to the front.

The law was created mainly for this reason.  CHP wanted the bikes to have the opportunity to be clear of traffic, since the heavy traffic is more dangerous to us riders.  Also, stop lights or signs are where most rearend accidents occur, if I've split my way up front I have no concern about being rearended.

i lane split everyday and almost every red light. you can lane split as long as traffic is going under 40 mph and its safe to do so. if you get into a accident its considered your fault because it wasnt safe to split (stupid i know)

Wildcat: why is it an "extreme d bag move"?   is legal here in cali , alot of riders do it and the cars will even move over for you and give you enough room to pass. are you just jealous that you cant do it legally ? i dont understand how you can make a comment like that there really isnt anything to support your comment.. maybe im just slow so please explain why its a dirt bag move ?

I guess its like when a wheel chair person gets to cut in line at a park.  They've been sitting all day and you've been in line for over an hour.

Well people in new york need to chill the hell out, cause if somebody said some shit to me id slap them in their face or kick their ride and bounce the f out.  Im from northern california and we all do it even at left hand turns, ill just ride up to the front and roll.  Completely legal and encouraged

I split lanes at every single red light, even if it's only a couple cars. It's legal, I do it, get over it. If you think it's a d-bag move then too freakin bad.

Up here in VA everyone thinks they are the traffic patrol vigilantes and will cut you off if you try it or swerve at you/block the lanes because you are getting ahead of them, besides getting flipped off and blasted with the horn.

well here in cali alot of people will clear the way when they see a biker trying to get to the front, myself included and I have never heard of ANYONE getting mad over bikers doing this...... Must be a cali thing.

Very common.  The law was put on the books in California because back in the day most bikes were air cooled.  As everyone knows it can get hot here.  So they put the law on the books to allow motorcycles to split traffic to keep from overheating.

When I first started riding I did not split lanes.  After getting comfortable I started doing it more and more.  You'll get used to it and eventually split lanes daily.  I try to keep my speed under 30 mph but sometimes find myself at higher speeds.  The law says it must be done in a safe manner.  Use your good sense.  I've never had a problem with anyone giving me a hard time.

i live in texas and the only d bag move is big ass f250's with the exteneded mirrors trying to swerve to block me from getting to the front... well needless to say... those big exteneded mirrors dont do them alot of good when they are laying on the floor... im not sure if its legal here but mang ITS EFFIN HOT! and im kinda a big guy so when its hot mang my ass is not playin around... i even did a few burn outs infront of someone's ride to get the to stfu...  hot rubber + nice paint = bitch to get off!!
