In gear...full throttle...huh?

motorcyclemano -> In gear...full throttle...huh? (7/31/2007 9:28:04 AM)

Hey all. I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping some of you have more bike smarts than me (wouldn't be too hard). Just took my 95 CBR600F3 out of storage on Saturday and went for a ride. Took her to the local pump and filled her up with 91 Octane. As I'm booting along HWY 404, I gave her a fistfull of throttle and she starting complaining. Lack of power, and some sputtering is what I got. At first I thought bad gas. Felt like the fuel/air mixture was off or a cylinder not firing right. In neutral she'll rev right up there with no complaints with all throttle positions (moderate, medium and aggressive). In any gear, she'll also rev right up there (as long as it's done with moderate or medium throttle positioning), but wack her open in any gear and the trouble begins. What could this be? Inition, wiring, ECM, carbs? I'd appreciate any ideas or similar experiences. Don't want to take her to the dealership and get hosed. This is the 1st time in 13 riding seasons that anything has gone wrong. She's been a great ride and I plan on keeping her forever. There's 39,000 KM on the dial.

Sounds like the needles are junked up. I'm take them off and clean them. I think you can soak them in sea foam(?) Don't quote me on that but that would be my best quess.

Try slowly going to WOT rather than just hammering it.  i.e. instead of snapping the throttle open, take 1-2 seconds to get there and see if it does the same thing.  Mine does the same thing as yours when I snap it to WOT but its only every so often and its just that the carbs are dirty from storage.  If I go to WOT slower, or just hold the WOT, it will kick right through it in a few milliseconds.

Edit: yah my advice, run 1 can of seafoam through the tank, and next tank, spray some seafoam deep creep in the vacum lines as it reccomends.  Probably wouldnt hurt to synch your carbs while you're at it.

Thanks for the re[lies. If I go to WOT at slow or medium, there is no problem. It only seems to happen when I snap it open. Haven't tried holding it there, because I was afraid of what I might be doing to it. I'll give it a shot on the way home from work today. Sea Foam? Is that some sort of carb cleaner?

You can get Seafoam at Autozone.  Its a cleaner but not a spray can you pour it in with your fuel.  Old school method is a shot of marvel's or tranny fluid through the carbs.

Seafoam "deep creep" is a spray that you spray in the vaccum lines, normal seafoam you put in the tank.

TennesseeCBRF2 -> RE: In gear...full throttle...huh? (8/1/2007 12:34:16 AM)

Seafoam is a magical, mystery liquid that uses tiny gnomes to spirit away dirt and gunk in your fuel system. You can also use it in the crankcase for 100 miles or so before an oil change to really clean her out!

Well, they don't sell this stuff up here in Canada, so a buddy and I took a nice bike ride down to the American side of Niagara. I bought up a few bottles of the stuff, and I just put in about 1 ounce per gallon to the tank. I took her for a ride (60km or 40mls). Nothing yet. I'm guessing I may have to get her out for a really good ride. Any idea on how long before I can consider other options? 1 tank full? 2 tanks? 3?

urandaman -> RE: In gear...full throttle...huh? (8/21/2007 11:13:16 AM)

with seafoam.. i havent seen a difference in adding it to the gas except a tad better throttle response(i have fuel injection, not carbs) but if you get the spray can sea foam and spray it in the nooks and crannys of the carbs and give them a good soaking, they should clean up a bit and break down any build up thats inside the carbs.

motorcyclemano -> RE: In gear...full throttle...huh? (8/21/2007 12:48:15 PM)

I think you're reffering to the "Deep Creep" spray version, which unfortunately Autozone did not carry. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the gas add stuff will do it. If not, I guess I'll have the carbs removed and have them soaked, re-calibrated and re-installed. After that, it gets scarey. Throttle Position Sensor, ECM (or ECU), RAM air gadgetry. There are so many possibilities.

redzintimidator -> RE: In gear...full throttle...huh? (8/21/2007 2:00:28 PM)

maybe it is lack of airflow. On my old bike, some gas backflowed out of the carbs into the air filter, even after the filter dried, it didnt get up n go anymore at higher rpm....so make sure your air filter is allowing all the air you need to pass through it.

woo545 -> RE: In gear...full throttle...huh? (8/22/2007 3:53:11 AM)

I removed my carbs took apart the jets and used the finest piece of wire I could find (came from a twist tie that held my neighbors toy in the box). You don't want to use the wrong guage wire. You run the risk of widening the holes, making the problem worse. The Jets were unbelievably clogged. Only took me about 2 hrs.

(Note: My bike was sitting 4 yrs with old gas in it. Not sure how effective Seafoam would have been in this situation, but for me it was worth the experience of understanding how the carburator works).

Lrn2Go -> RE: In gear...full throttle...huh? (8/22/2007 6:47:29 AM)

Yeah, it sounds to me like your carbs need a good cleaning. However, in a car (was a car mechanic for 6 years), if you can sit at idle and rev it out, or rev it up slowly in gear, but kickin' it to WoT and it sputters, it's a misfire under a load situation.. Usually, in my experience, a good place to check would be your spark plugs. If those are old/corroded/carboned up/burnt off/improperly gapped, you'll get sputtering under heavy load like lockin' it back to WoT. I know, 90% of the time, I'd change the spark plugs and the wires in a car and it'd run like a champ! Hope that gives you another idea to check. Good luck!

Yup I had the same problem on an older bike it turns out the air filter was clogged to crap. It could get air through but when it needed alot at once it couldn't pull it. Replaced air filter and it worked.

Good sound advice. I'll be pulling the plugs and filters out this weekend to make sure all is OK there. Keep you posted and thanks again.
