You will love riding...I agree with those that say you shouldn't let a little spill stop you. We all have gone down (my wife ran me over me at one point). Get back on the horse...you will be happy you did...trust me!!!

These guys aren't steerin' ya wrong! I rode some dirt bikes and trials bikes when I was younger... but when I went out and went for my first road bike, I bought a Honda Rebel. It's an awsome, durable, little 250cc 'cruiser'. I still took the riding class and all that, but the leasons I learned on that bike during the year that I rode it really helped alot of things sink in deep where they need to when you're working on building confidence and skill. I would NEVER recommend something bigger than a 250cc for your very first bike... and if anybody gives you crap for it, what worked for me was "Well, if you're so concerned about my bike, why don't you buy me a new one so I can ride what you want me to ride?" Haha... that shuts em up quick. Welcome to the forums, and yeah, don't wuss out on us. Riding isn't for everyone, but a timid 30 minutes can't show you the life of a rider and what we all enjoy so much. That being said... EVERYONE drops a bike at some point. Maybe sitting in your driveway, maybe doin' 5 miles an hour in a parking lot, maybe big-and-bad on the freeway. It'll happen. That's another good thing about most 250cc bikes... get a used one and you're not going to spend very much $$. That makes you feel alot better if you do drop it while learning. Killer is when you drop your $10K+ (american) bike with your countless, hard-to-replace kits and mods. Live and learn! (Oh, and a little 250cc bike has hella cheap insurance, and you're gonna get 60-70+ mpg. It was cheaper for me to buy my 250cc new, make payments, pay insurance AND gas... than it was to JUST pay for GAS on my 1971 Dodge Polara.)

don't let it discourage you. if he didn't give you instructions on how to handle the bike at low speeds (which, in my opinion, is tougher than at high speeds), then it's not completely your fault. here are a few things i did before i went for my first ride on my 600 Katana (which is so slow that it's more like a 500 or 250 even). first of all i read the Texas DPS motorcycle manual and got my permit. the manual went through the basics on how to steer and lean and all that. i also looked up as many videos on YouTube as possible. i probably spent at LEAST a couple hours watching youtube videos, Mordeth13 has some good videos for beginning riders. i also found a video that's sort of an ad for the MSF course, and they showed a few of the "drills" that they do in the course, so i learned a little bit there as well. the toughest part for me to learn was turning at slow speeds, like taking off from a stop sign and making a sharp right-hand turn, especially on that heavy Katana, it was frightening at first. the first right turn i took, i wasn't sure how much steering input would be enough or too much, and i went way too wide and almost went headfirst into an oncoming car who (fortunately) saw what was happening and pulled over to get out of my way. i felt completely retarded, but i learned from it and moved on. i learned pretty quick though, i did some slow strolls through my neighborhood and within an hour i was riding in traffic through town. Just keep at it, try to find you a decent used bike to learn on, and then when you feel confident enough, sell it and get a 600F4 or something like that. definitely don't jump from a 250 to a 1000, you'll learn real quick the price of a little too much throttle input.

Learning can be a biotch. But dont fret. I think a dirt bike is a great way to go. It teaches you more than you would think.

yea..and as i am sure someone has already said, or you have already read somewhere that there are only two kinds of riders...those that have wrecked and those that will...look at it as getting it out of the way early

well sounds like you learned an important lesson in humility. not everyone can hop on a motorcycle and be fine @ it, but that doesnt mean you should give up either. keep at it and you'll be doing great. ake the motorcycle class offered in yoru area and that will build your confidence back up. btw i love how you say your buddy was an idiot for letting you ride his bike. he was trying to help you out and im probably the only person so far that thinks you should pay the full amount. if i ever let anyone ride my bike they understand that they will pay to fix any damage they cause. also why is he reporting it to his insurance . if the damage isnt that much why not try and get the replacment parts through a private party, that way he wont have a claim on his record and you will probably get away with paying less then the 700 to fix it.

ORIGINAL: HAVOC take the motorcycle class offered in yoru area and that will build your confidence back up. something else i forgot to mention about the MSF course... they supply the bikes, so if you fall, it's not yours or a friend's bike, and i don't believe they make you pay for damages as long as you're following their instructions. the course here is $150, i'm pretty sure that's the cost anywhere that it's offered. not sure about other states, but here in Texas, if you have a certificate from the safety course, you can get your license without having to take the riding test. the written test is easy, so don't sweat it because most of the questions there require just a little bit of common sense. sign up for a motorcycle safety course and they'll teach you all the things you would have otherwise had to learn the hard way (wrecking your friend's bike at low speed isn't nearly as bad as it could have been... had you gotten too confident, you could be in the hospital or the morgue right now).
