I finally got a new fuel pump and it pumps fuel up to the carbs but the bike still wont run. I know it will run if it got fuel because i poured gas straight down the intake and it starts fine just wont stay running. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did it run when you bought it?

no it didnt run but I just got it running after cleaning the carbs and it will only run with the choke on, so I'm guessing the carbs will need to be rebuilt?

Even after it warms up it only runs with the choke on? How did you clean the carbs? Did you tear them down short of pulling them off the racks? Jets and emulsion tubes out?

I pulled the carbs off the bike and pulled the bowls off and whatever the top of them is called off. I sprayed them out really good with carb cleaner and it made it actually run and I got to ride it around. Once I turn the choke off it will die unless I have it revved up.

At what rpm does the bike run with the choke turned on? Have you tried to turn up the idle adjustment on the left side under the service cover?

I have the the idle as high as it will go, it will idle with the choke on but it runs like crap and hesitates really bad, but when i ride I can take the choke off and it will go until I come to a stop then it will die. I think its just not getting enough fuel so I am going to take the carbs off again and clean them one more time really good, any suggestions on how to clean them or what to use. Thanks for your help

Take them apart as far as you can get them without removing them from the racks. Don't take the bracket off at the air filter housing either. Remove the jets, emulsion tubes, needle seats, floats, float needles, slides, metering needles, chokes. Clean thoroughly with a very potent carb cleaner. Honda carb cleaner was the best, but they quit selling it (Stupid EPA). Blow all orifices out with compressed air after a good soaking, make sure there isn't any poo poo in the jets or emulsion tubes. Use steel wool if you can't get all the poo out of the bowls. That stuff has a habit of breaking up and getting stuck in your jets. Clean your throttle plates and air intakes really good too. When you put it back together make sure the chokes all open at the same time and close all the way. Make sure that the float needles slide easily and seal when shut. Don't mess with float height, it should be set. You will probably have to sync the carbs when done, but that's a different story.

I use this stuff i got from the Auto parts store. Its called Valvoline Synthetic Carb/throttle body cleaner. That stuff works great. Every oil change i spray some in my throttle body on my car, and clean the PCV valve with it. Boy the black liquid just gushes out of the throttle body when i spray it in. Then i start it up and spray some more. It keeps the car running great. I havent used it on anything else, but the stuff works wonders. Here is a link to the stuff i use... http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?product=52.

ok, I got it running finally but now I think the fuel/air mixture needs to be adjusted, it starts up only with the choke on until it warms up then it idles without it but at low rpms it will die when I give it gas, so how do I adjust the fuel/air mixture?
