How hard is it to remove the top half of the fairing souroundign the headlight as I want to have my 06 model re painted

Really depends on how familliar you are with doing it.

1) Remove the mirrors,
2) Remove the 6 bolts connecting the lowers to the uppers.
3)   Remove the bolts holding the windscreen in place, and pull the wind screen
4)   Remove the plastic push pins in the upper surround of the dash, remove the bolt on each side.
5)   Pull the front plastic surround by the dash on each side.
6)   Unscrew the phillips head connector holding the back part of the dash cowlings
7)   Remove the plastic push pins up under the headlight.

Pretty much that should do it. I never pull the lowers along with it unless I need to for something else, it just helps me line everything up. From here you should be able pull the upper cowl away from around the mirrors, and it will come forward. You'll need to disconnect the headlights. If you missed any push pins, you'll figure it out pretty quick

Installation is pretty much the reverse.. Hook up the head lights first (Low beam is on TOP!) and hook it over the mirror mounts. The rest is pretty straightforward.
