I've always wanted an RC51 and have been thinking of buying one to compliment the CBR1000rr in the garage. I love how twins make power and noting on the planet sounds like one either. I tried the Ducati thing and was let down by engine problems and horrible dealer support. I've been thinking an RC51 is the poor man's Ducati 999R. Anyone out there own one or ridden one?

my friend had a 2000 rc51 from 2002 till about 6 months ago. it was totally strange to ride. it felt like it fell on its side when cornering. it loved to lean. the only real complaint was the tach. hard to see when riding.

ORIGINAL: cjbettis http://www.cbrforum.com/m_35391/mpage_1/key_rc51/tm.htm#37335 I asked about the RC versus 1000RR Hmmmm....interesting. A bunch of comments from people who don't understand or have never ridden a performance based twin. The one member who compared the RC51 to a Buell (without having ridden the RC51) is laughable. Buell's are high tech chassis with a crappy ancient Harley motor with agricultural qualities. The RC is a high performance engine designed to beat Ducati at its own game (and they did 2 out of 3 seasons on the track). The way the RC and the CBR1000 make power is actually pretty close. The RC's peak horsepower is only 1000 rpm before the big CBR and the torque specs are almost identical. I'm sure the RC's motor will feel different though. Twins do generally make more torque than an inline motor, but the big CBR is a torque monster. The RC51 actually makes a few ft pounds less than the big CBR. The heat issue has nothing to do with the fact that it is a twin, it comes from those side mounted radiators. At speed you will never notice them, but in stop and go they will get hot. My VFR800 had the same layout. What appeals to me is I love the sound of twins and they way they make power, plus the RC51 has always seemed like a special bike to me. You just don't see them very often and I like that. The idea of buying a bike that will beat a Ducati 999 for half the money, is tons more reliable, and the maintenance costs a quarter of the Ducati seems almost too good to be true. Also, I read that they were actually built by HRC and Honda lost money on every one sold, but that may have just been in the first couple of years of production, I'm not sure. They have a lot of neat parts that are common to a bike built in small numbers. Magnesium engine case covers, sand cast parts, etc. Hopfully I'll get a chance to ride one come spring and then I'll decide, but I'm leaning towards buying one, to keep the big CBR company in my garage!

You know when you see ladies like that with kids you realize someone.................. There is some guy somewhere thinking, "I've got to get me some of that!" Or like my boss at my first job out of college (selling cars) told me, there is a seat for every ass and an ass for every seat!
