GSXR Mirrors

DR.ZED -> GSXR Mirrors (10/25/2007 7:48:35 PM)

Well I finally did this mod!  I bought a set of knock off GSXR mirrors from eBay at a reasonable price.  $70 US for the pair.

When they arrived I knew that they were ONLY signal lights.  Well I wanted running lights AND signal lights so apart they went.  I REALLY hit some snags getting the mounting arms to work with the CBR.  There was NO way they were mounting and actually being functional.  I thought the project was done right at the end, but I figured out what to do.

I'll explain below.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/drzed28/Bikes/GSXR%20mirrors/CIMG4865.jpg

Here is the stock bulb and socket from the new mirrors.  Only two wires, because it is a signal light only.

Literally pull the bulb and the metal socket will pop out of the plastic container.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/drzed28/Bikes/GSXR%20mirrors/CIMG4867.jpg

Bought a "socket" pigtail set.  Note whether the base has an offset pattern or not for the nubs on the bulb

See the difference in the new and old socket.  I pulled out my trusty dremmel and matched the plastic opening to the metal socket.

Now you have a socket for running and turn signal in the proper base for the new mirrors.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/drzed28/Bikes/GSXR%20mirrors/CIMG4871.jpg

Use the existing two wires for the positive (running and signal) and added a ground.

DONE!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/drzed28/Bikes/GSXR%20mirrors/CIMG4881.jpg

Note, I decided right at the end I was going to take a hammer to my stock mirrors and removed the "arm" from the stock CBR handle and then attached it with the hardware from the CBR arm to new mirror.  Not a perfect match, but it was the ONLY way that the mirror will be remotely useful.  The angle on the GSXR mounting is SO far off I was going to scratch the whole project there.

I must say I again am impressed with the made in Taiwan knock off light assemblies I've been purchasing.  They're not nearly as bad or cheap as you'd think.

Just wondering if there was a reason.. other than appearance?

I did look around and I really didn't like the look of them at first.

Also with the onslaught of cheap LEDs hitting products everywhere, it would be a matter of time before they burned out and I would be screwed.  With a bulb I could atleast change it.

Also I knew all along I wanted to make them running lights.  Couldn't do that with an LED properly.

wow looks great!  my bf has an 06 gsxr and i have to say i am so jealous of his mirrors. great mod.

Icyalkn -> RE: GSXR Mirrors (10/27/2007 5:48:00 AM)

Right on that's kewl, Just for future referance, Watsen Design does infact have a running light module for LED's. Just incase for the future[;)]

alekinci -> RE: GSXR Mirrors (10/28/2007 4:53:03 PM)

not to mess with you ZED but the bulbs have much more chance of burning out than LED.
Also, you could have made the LED mirrors into running lights too.
still its fun to work on the bike.

DR.ZED -> RE: GSXR Mirrors (10/28/2007 4:59:14 PM)

I agree 100%.  LEDs do last longer.

Until you start manufacturing LEDs with cheap materials and then pawn them to the market left right and center.  Just like anything you pay more for the quality.

I have THREE LED supplied pieces failed in the last year because they were cheaply made.  First two were LED replacement running light bulbs for my Jetta, the second was a LED license plate light.

Be wary of spending money and getting LEDs for a critical application that you can't replace.

Looks great! .. thanks for the post!

hoody1982 -> RE: GSXR Mirrors (5/22/2008 12:41:35 AM)

wow that's funny, I just did the same thing last week...only mine were off an 05 GSXR that my roomate wrecked lol. I also left them as signals only though, I am going to get some flush mounts to fill the holes in the fairings and run them as running lights only.

redzintimidator -> RE: GSXR Mirrors (5/22/2008 5:53:07 AM)

**cough cough** raise the dead

its ok, your new here[:D]

hoody1982 -> RE: GSXR Mirrors (5/22/2008 2:05:15 PM)

has nothing to do with being new...more to do with being bored at 4 AM.

Stitches -> RE: GSXR Mirrors (6/2/2008 10:45:13 PM)

ZED,

What year GSXR mirrors and what model ??

I have a mirror from a 06 or 07 gsxr 600, and there is no way that mirror can fit on my 2006 f4i ???
