I synched my carbs today because I just felt like it needed it. I took them completely apart and out of the bracket when I rebuilt them, so when I put them back together, I just eyeballed it but I had a feeling. Also, my headers were at different temps so I figured it was time.

The Motion Pro gauge with Mercury was $60 at my local shop and worth every penny.

The Clymer manual states that you need to be with 1.6 (inches?) on the gauge and that's pretty good. When I first started, the difference between my #1 and #2 was about 6 or 7 inches! So I'm a happy guy and the bike is running great. If you can adjust your mixture screws, you can do this yourself and it's fun.

Been on my list of things to do.  Also good to know about the tool too.  Which shop had it, specifically?

I got it at Performance Cycle Denver, which is just a mile or two from my home.

It was $65 plus tax. Like I said, it's the (old school) one with Mercury in it, so you have to keep it upright; hang on the wall or something when you're not using it.

I was looking at "carb tune II" and the (non-mercury) Motion Pro on line and they were all $100-$120. But there's no mercury, so you don't have to worry about keeping it vertical.

Either way, it pays for itself the first time. Having a shop do it would absolutely cost more than $100.

Yep, which is why I am going to buy one and do it myself.  I was also looking at the CarbTune, but it is like at least $100.  I thought it was mercury though.

There's a version of Carb Tune (maybe Carb Tune II), that's not mercury. I guess mercury's not a problem, unless you drop it or something. But I was ready to spend $100 too, so when it was $65 I was pretty excited.
