"quite the contrary my blind drunken friend!"--of course I'm kidding

It's not that it's ugly, I know alpha doesn't mind ugly, what with living with his mom and all, they're just a bit dated

Good info.  I know the earlier ones had a 898cc engine and the later ones had the 918cc engine, but I really never hear anyone say the 918 engine is really better.  Is there a real word power difference?

The 92-95, 96-97 and the 98-99.

Only outside the U.S. will you find official 1992 model 900RR's. Here in the colonies you could buy a '93 in early 1992--but it doesn't really matter. And of the three families, '95 is kind of the slutty step-sister with just about as many parts from 93-94 as it does 96-97. Generally though, almost everything will interchange between 93-97. Very little from 98-99 carried over from previous models. Honda designated only two families if you look at the serial number code in your VIN: SC28 for 93-95, SC33 for 96-99. Elsewhere in the world, '92 is referred to as RRN, '93 is RRP, '94 and '95 are RRR and RRS, '96 and '97 are RRT and RRV, while '98 and '99 are RRW and RRX.

Now that you're totally confused, my personal favorites (on appearance only) are both original U.S. 1993 versions and any color from 1998 (red, yellow, or black, all gorgeous).

Just a little question. I have a 900rr that by vin is a '95, the engine code (SC28e-2301764) I believe puts it at a 94 and it has the twin headlights like the 93-94 models did along with the front wheel speedo and matching gagues. I suspect the front end was replaced along with the wheel and fairings or did they crossbreed them early on in 95?

See like this:

I love the low sheen on that black, very nice. According to Honda's engine number list, SC28E-23xxxxx indicates a '95 model. And if you find stamped part numbers, MW0 refers to 93-94, MAE is 95 only, and MAS is for 96-97. For example, the upper cowl for 93-94 is # 64100-MW0-850ZA and the '95 is # 64100-MAE-670ZA.

This only helps with OEM parts, of course, and I'm sure you're right, someone re-fitted the previous year's front end onto your '95, which only came with the flush, 'single' headlamp unit. After '94 in the U.S., white wheels did not come equipped.

What I would like to know is if '95 frames came with mounting holes for both styles of mirror stay brackets. I swear '95 only came with the dual hole setup on top of the frame where the front of the gas tank mounts, whereas 93-94 were the only ones with the holes on the face of the frame, like in your picture. Didn't you have some issues with the bracket recently? That makes me think someone drilled a pair of threads to accomodate the earlier stay.

Right, no, no difference that would make you sit up and take notice. Exactly the same real-world difference in the fact that they're actually 893 and 919--which used to make a difference back in the day insurance-wise. Some policies specified "900 and above" for large displacement, so at the time, it helped to have an 893. Now there really aren't those same kind of displacement brackets, it's all model specific as it relates to statistics, I think.

I would be just as happy with either size, as long as the abuse factor has been light to none, it'll be a strong unit for potentially hundreds of thousands of miles, no joke.

According to the microfische 95-97's have the same one I do. My problem was with my wreck messing it all up. I've yet to fix that problem.

OK so the motors are all pretty much the same, are there any significant handling or ergo changes through the years?

Nothing significant until '98, when changes were made just about everywhere. Great choice for a used sport bike.
