Well since I have rode a motorcycle only once I do have some fear. Not to the point where I think it will effect me, but it generates a great deal of respect for the bike.

NC Dave, do you live where your sirname implies? If so where abouts? I just moved 8 months ago, I'm in the triad area. Sounds like you have a great safety plan. I'm a senior, as far as sport bikes go, myself. Give me a shout if you are in my area. Be safe and have FUN on your new ride.

I live about an hour north of Raleigh, but I will be moving to the Orlando, FL area at the beginning of the new year. I just got my riding gear this afternoon so tomorrow will be my first ride. Thanks for the well wishes!

Best of luck with the move, riding year round, NICE!!!!! Your gear couldn't have come at a better time, around 60' today, just beat the rain drops. Again, best of luck, be safe, have fun and ENJOY!!!!!

Dave I live in Gainesville Fla, which is about 130 miles north of orlando and I'll be the first to tell you that you probably won't need leather to stay warm if that is one of your worries. I just bought myself an Icon Super Duty jacket and I love it. It has all of the removable armor, has a waxed cotton torso so it is wind and water proof, has zip-off leather sleeves, and a removable inner liner. I rode to work yesterday and today when it was in the 40 degree range with nothing but a short sleeved shirt under the jacket and I didn't even get a chill. The Jacket retails for about $200 but you can find them on Ebay brand new for @$140. I lucked up and got mine for $105. quote:
ORIGINAL: NC Dave Here's the deal... I'm 40 years old and FINALLY bought a bike. I have riden 4 wheelers the last 6 years and used to ride BMX as a kid (Yes, they had BMX back then). I have no interest in racing, doing wheelies, cartwheels, etc. I live in the country with lots of open road to learn how to ride. My plan is to buy a DOT/Snell helmet, gloves and some sort of protective jacket. I don't want to spend a great deal, but being new to riding I need some input. Am I missing any crucial protective gear? Should I look for certain features? Thanks! Thumbnail Image

i would have to voice my opinion against icon gear. they are nice looking and very bling looking but as far as crash tests, they are not very good. they tend to shred at the seams. for cruising around town at like 30 mph, but not for hardcore or canyon riding.

I'm mainly a commuter rider and also a novice. When I get more advanced and become a more aggressive rider I probably will buy some more rugged (and expensive) gear. But I think that the Icon jacket is the best for the money for a beginner. -James D

I will be looking for some lighter weight gear in a few months. Right now I want the best protection I can get (within my budget) being a new rider.

I picked up a Teknic leather jacket and it seems rugged as hell. I still can't believe I got it for under $100.

I, like you, am just starting out. I bought a new '06 F4i a few weeks ago and spared no expense with trying to get the best I could afford. More expensive is not always better, but you normally get what you pay for. I picket up a Shoei RF-1000 helmet, power trip gloves with carbon fiber knuckle protection and aluminum rivets in the palm area, a Joe Rocket leather jacket with full armor, a pair of Diadora boots that are mid calf in height with good ankle stiffness and protection with toe sliders also. The first times out I wore regular levis with my improvised carpenters knee pads from home depot but found two things: one was that you will freeze in jeans, and two, the knee pads were stiff and movement was a pain. Tonight on my way home, I stopped at the bike store and picked up a pair of Joe Rocket 'alter ego' pants. They're tough nylon with a removeable waterproof liner, lots of vents, a zipper to zip the back to my jacket and tough padding in the kidneys, hips and of course, knees. They fit right on over jeans perfectly or in summer, I imagine jean shorts if they get kind of hot. My next and final purchase is a back protector. The jacket does have a pad over the back, but not terribly thick. It amazes me every summer how I see guys on any kind of bike cruising along in jean shorts, shoes or even sandals, and a T-shirt. The only protection is a helmet. I may burn up sitting at stop lights, but It's a small price to pay.

no mang...final purchase will be a pair of leather riding pants mang! it's gotta fit SUPER tight and you work it in...to mold to your body. anything bigger, it could slide around in a crash and give you burns that way. as far as backprotector, a good cheaper one is velocity gear...check them out...
