10-year ban for popping a wheelie in Miami

South Florida has a motorcycle problem, and lawmakers are introducing legislation to show bikers that they'll go a long way to punish those who break the rules. Stunt riding (including wheelies), excessive speeding, and concealable license plates will get you a 10 year ban on your motorcycle license, mandatory jail time, and an impounded bike. If the punishment sounds like the medieval practice of cutting off the hand of a man for stealing, that's exactly how State Representative Carlos Lopez-Cantera wants it.

Lopez-Cantera witnessed firsthand a variety of incidents during which reckless behavior was on display, including bikers flying down the highway at 120 mph, high speed wheelies, and more. Police officers can't even run plates since bikers will often flip them up to avoid detection, and it's very difficult to catch a motorcycle on the open road with a squad car. We like motorcycles, even though our focus is on cars, and it's disappointing to see that things have apparently gotten so out of hand in South Florida that draconian enforcement policies are being seriously discussed.

Introducing new laws: It's the only way any state can legally harass a citizen and get away with it.

Look at what's happening at the Gap.  Same thing, different place, no?

This shit is scary...is there anything we can do to stop this from going thru?  i don't live in FL but i dont want it to catch on and have other states doing it.  This is seriously way too harsh…they’re gonna take your bike, arrest you, and u cant ride for 10 yrs…even for excessive speeding or having a license plate that’s not visible!

thats a bunch of crap.  at some point all of us young, old, stunters, racers, or avg. joe like to twist the wrist and go fast every now and then.  with that in mind there would be no more bikes in fl.  let me know where to sign a petition i don't want that bs happening here in  tx

harsh? yes. overkill? yes. But then again wheelies dont belong on public roads. None of us need to be doing 30over the limit. And running gets people killed. So dont like it, dont do it. Its that simple.

^ i agree but id really hate to see cops and law makers abuse this law the same way things happened with "street racers" in fixed up hondas and acuras. even if your car looked like it belongd in "fast and the furious" you go tpulled over and labeled as a street racer. i can easily imagine the same things happening with motorcycles. cops pullin gover everyone who has a exhaust and flush mounts, especially anyone who is lowered and stretched... hopefully things wont turn out this way

Do you not see what those guys are doing? They are breaking the law and putting others at risk. You do the crime and you will do the time. There are business owners who are very willing to let stunters use their parking lots if you ask for permission. Why not do it there?

Don't do it on public roads. Plain and simple. Obviously, you're going to get screwed in FL now.

These sorts of fines/punishments are going to increase across the country as cities deal with budget deficits. I believe Virginia has started the $1300 ticket for certain speeds and it's only a matter of time until other states follow.

It's easy to avoid.
