ORIGINAL: Coopz My front tyre is almost 9 years old, 17,500k and still good:) Going to replace it next week though... How on earth do you get 17K from a front tyre? Is it made of metal?!! I take it the shelf life talk is a lot of rubbish then... just another rumour to keep the tyre companies in business?

No, Flogger, definitely NOT a rumour - I'm closely associated with Dunlop and other tyre mnfg companies, who'll tell you (if they're honest) that a tyre DOES have a shelf life of four years, and there are codes imprinted into the wall of the tyre telling you when it was made. Rubber degrades over time, even when not used, and when you combine road heat with all the cornering and braking stresses a front tyre in particular has to go through, it's a wonder that more guys don't come off as a result of old tyres - I guess "somebody up there likes them" - I've had a number of old tyres explode on me, fortunately not on a bike, but I've heard and seen a number of prangs caused by old, hard, tyres which crumble under load.

i disagree shadow, it depends on the abuse it gets as you say hot temp will degrade a tire faster than say colder temps, sure rubber perishes in time but im sure that guy with 9 years life out of his tire and 17,000km would not have had it in any state it was unsafe, if he wanted to prove it then he could post a pic, im not saying that thats what the manufacturer states.. i think they just want to sell you more tires:)

Well I got 22,000 km's out of my old Michelin Pilot Road in three years, were only the last 2-3000 km's were illegal... Pretty good from a front tire, and I don't wear them with caution. I just think that new tire designs have moved sports touring tires a long way from the tires that we knew just ten years age in terms of durability and their ability to remain sticky over a long period of time.

JB and Noe - you are both from areas where riding in winter is less advisable.....! Perhaps your tyres don't degrade as quickly as ours - 60F temps in winter, and up to 110F in summer, wirh extreme humidity. Road temps of 120F+ that we have for most of the year will quickly destroy a tyre, as we all agree. I guess the question's academic, and a matter of personal choice - you use what you're comfortable with. Also, definitions of tyres that are "past it" in terms of performance will differ, perhaps I'm a little more critical - surviving is what it's really about.... We are able to ride every day, all year round, if you don't mind the occasional rainstorm, so tyres take a hammering.... " A good ride is one you can walk away from, and a great ride is when you get to use the bike again"

ORIGINAL: scrapy918 here's my 1991 CBR 1000F, with 83K miles. Lovely looking bike (and yours too Shadow). Love the "foreign" colour schemes. Are you still on the original rubber after 17 years and 83K? Tee hee

Why do the bike firms produce different colour schemes for different countries? I am sure there is a reason but I can't think of one. The American fireblade colours were much better than the European ones too.

I know my colour scheme was made only for distribution in California, and had a bunch of "emission control" stuff like catalytic converters etc to comply with legislation in that state. Needless to say, the first things which were removed from my bike were all the emission control "power robbers"....!!! Before removal, 130 MPH tops, after removal and addition of pipes, K& N and Dynojet kit, 170+ MPH - not bad for an 18 year old .........I think they have some strange notion in Japan that certain colour schemes will be more attractive in different countries than others, and also to limit "grey" (non dealer supported) imports. Other than that......anybody else got any ideas ?
