I have absolutely no idea about this, so please help.  My bike has a huge dent in the tank (from the handle bar) on the left.  When I turn the fork to the right (while parked) it stops the handles just before hitting the tank.  The left does not.  I'm 100 % sure the bike was dropped many times before by previous owner.  Could the "bump stop" be busted and that's why the handle bar slams into the tank on the left?

I plan to paint up the tank and don't want to scratch a new paint job the first time I have to turn the bike around in my driveway.  So if it's fixable, I'll fix it.

look down the gap between tank and instrument cluster. you should be able to see steering stops on bottom fork clamp. as you turn the bars lock to lock, do the stops contact the stops on the frame?

you could move the clip-on bar, either side, fore or aft. but they won't move far as they have a stop on the top clamp to prevent them from rotating around the fork tube.

the steering stop on the frame could be damaged or smashed back preventing the stop on the bottom clamp from contacting.

if you need a pic of how this is supposed to look, reply back to the post and i'll post some up.

I'll check that area more thoroughly when I get home and can see it all.  If its easy enough to post the pic, that would probably really help me as I'm not familiar with anything about bikes yet.  But having steering stops makes sense and I'm sure one of them is busted.

Thanks for the reply.

here are a couple of pics, one is looking from the top down, one is at right lock, and another is centered.

check the clip ons. when the bike was tipped the end of the bar-end weight probably hit the ground and bent the bar... if there is any scrapes on the bar end weight or it is missing the clip on is likely bent.

Yeah, the clip-ons have got to be it. The bump stops look just like the pictures above (Thanks Michigan_313).  So I'm sure the cilp-on is bent on the left side.  I haven't gotten familiar with that yet, but I'll figure it out when I've got some time.  Depending on what IS bent, I'll try to replace it.

Thanks again for all the help.

I had a similar problem only mine was the right side. Every time I went to steering lock (to the bumper) my pinky finger got pinched between the bar and tank... they didn't touch like on yours but came too close for comfort, literally. I changed the clipon and solved the problem. Happy hunting for parts!
