Since it is Spring and some of us are just getting the bikes out after a long winter, it is a good time to give this thread a bump, so we remember to check our bikes out.

I am pleased to report my bike is free of cracks!

The 88 I picked up in December also cracked there (about the same length too).  I'm planning to weld it up as it sits for now (grind the area clean and disconnect battery) - I'll look tearing it all apart in the fall to do a full repair and paint the frame.

I shoul've adopted the same attitude...

Damnit! Why did I read this thread?

I got 'ze crack', and it looks identical to that in the posted image.

It got me thinking and I'm wondering, this is a 20yr old bike, at what age or after how many miles would this crack typically start appearing? If left untouched, does it expand and eventually grow long/large enough to split the frame? Did anyone hear about it breaking off completely? If not, assuming the crack has been there for the past 10 or 15 years, it tells me that this is about as bad as it will ever get and people been riding the bike as is without any other consequence(s). If a repair is absolutely necessary, can it be done with the engine still in the frame?

I'm just throwing out my thoughts on this. I'm pi**ed off that I didn't notice it when the engine was out and don't feel like doing it all over again, especially since it just started being nice enough outside to ride...

IDK, I'm still putting my money that these cracks are caused by stunting, wheelies in specific, the force of coming down on the front wheel seems like it would stress upwards consistent with the cracks.

But why only on the left side of the frame and not the right?

I didn't realize it was only the left side.  Was that on your bike alone, or what the OP said? its been awhile the details are beseiging me.

the crack can be welded w/ engine in the frame. this should be no problem for an experienced welder. if anything, the engine would act as a jig to keep everything straight. i've got over 90k on my bike and not a crack anywhere. what is causing the crack? undetermined. is it safe to ride with a crack in the spar? maybe. but do you really want to be the one that the frame completely fails on when you ride it? probably not, i'm guessing.

most of the old hurricane/f1's that i've seen were in pretty decent condition or at least taken care of.

mine is an 89. i also have a 88 frame, also no cracks. has anyone noticed if it is happening on a certain year or years?

I have not noticed a consistency in years.

From what I understand in this thread and this one, it's always on the left side, in the exact same place

Re: why only the left side, I would say that's structurally the weakest point (you're only as strong as the weakest link theory, water always finds it's level... you know what I'm getting at).

In the case of my bike, I believe the bike has been ridden hard in the past (seen the track) as there's some bolts on it that have been drilled so they can be wired to the frame and a few in the headlight bucket that still are.  I also agree with an earlier post that wheelie's are also likely culprit as well.

Welded (MIG) up the crack just now.   I believe I got good penetration and it flowed well (I'm not a professional welder) - we'll see how the weld holds up over time.

Got a slight bit offline following the crack up as it was hard to follow due to prepping the area (crack got lost in the grind) - so I had to widen the weld.  All-in-all, it doesn't look to bad (IMHO).  A little bit of dressing up tomorrow and I'll be ready to touch it up with paint.

I know nothing when it comes to welding, will have to have it done somehow. So I should be looking for someone with a MIG welder? How much would it cost (ballpark figure)?

you can have it either TIG or MIG welded. i prefer TIG, nicer weld, less post weld dressing. but as long as it gets welded it doesn't matter. should cost less than $100.
