Has anybody attempted a different front end(suspension) on a hurricane?  I have a YZF-r6 front end I've been eyeballing for the swap... Bigger tubes and brakes...  Can It be done?

as long as steering tube length is about the same and bearing sizes are the same that will be enough to get you going.

see link for other issues that you will run into. otherwise, it will work.

since forks are pretty much all standard diameter, you could get a honda triple and that will easily solve any steering tube length and bearing issues. i don't know if yammys use ball or taper roller bearings or what size.

oh, before i forget, what type of forks are you using, usd or regular, or what year r6?

clip-on height and clearance will be another big issue. but look at the link above. i used clip-ons with a 1 inch rise instead of the stock oem units.

I had two yzf r6s' . I built one out of two. 1995 had a blown engine 1996 was crashed. I still have the complete chassis for the 95. Most of the plastic that was worth salvage is on the combo bike.

so you are using conventional forks. check to see lengthwise how they compare with stock. i'm thinking r6 fork tubes are shorter than cane tubes. if r6 bottom clamp around the steering tube is longer or shorter than cane than you could use a f4/i top and bottom clamp. i think the f4/i forks are same diameter as the r6, i'm not sure, f4/i dia. is 43mm.

wait! r6 was not made until 1999. are you sure what you have is 95 and 96? are you sure you are not using 2005 and 2006? 05+ r6 uses usd forks. those are much bigger and would need clamp from later model honda.

either way, the shorter fork free length will change steering geometry.

they are definitely 95 and 96 models... the model before was the FZR600... maybe they have a different model designation in the U.S.A.  Thanks for the link... it is very informative. I also am looking for the wider rim and more adjustment for the front. This bike is going to be more of a naked bike. I am cleaning up the tabs on the frame, cleaning up the original weld splatter, and splashing on a color other than silver. It will be very minimalist.

i'd like to make mine a streetfighter but i cannot justify running it without the fairings as mine are still in pretty good shape and my favorite livery.

maybe another hurricane will come along in worse shape that i can work on. one day...

btw, that link is my bike sans bodywork. if you have any other questions about the swap, just ask.

I have always found they run cooler without the lowers in place... of course they look better on. All the goodies under the bodywork are unfinished looking-weld splatters, tabs and brackets, routing of wires and hoses. The engineers took full advantage of the fact it was to be covered. Like I wrote before, it will all be smoothed, rerouted, and generally "cleaned". The yammy front end will give me a larger choice of replacement rubber and bigger brakes. I may even hang a bigger rad and oil cooler on it. Fortunately I now have three copies so I can keep one stock and customize one.

are you going to use r6 rad and cooler or honda parts? i've found that a curved unit would fit nicely from a 954 or f4.

i thought about doing this as well, but the bike is heavy enough at the front as is. i was thinking about using mx rads in place of the stock rad. it would give better tire clearance and more mounting options with the bodywork on. or off.

keep us posted.

I agree that the bike is front heavy.  By removing the front fairing and stays, stock headlight and other misc pieces, the additional weight of the larger rad and cooler shouldn't affect the weight bias. I already have the r6 pieces...
