Depends on the fine print. Most insurance carriers that I have had over the years will not.

Maybe.. depends on your insurance.  I know mine covers me as long as its considered a "training" event and is not a timed or competition event.  But read your policy carefully.

Choose your words carefully and you should be fine.

Usually if the accident involves being anywhere other than a parking lot or a public road then no.

I'd say read the policy carefully and ask questions about anything that you don't know.  I had to find out after the fact that I didn't have Personal Injury Protection when someone hit me.

I have 2 Ducatis (2004 and 2007) insured with Geico. Great rates and coverage. I called today to inquire about getting comp (wind/fire/theft) and possibly liability for my garage-stored 2003 600RR in case I decided to street it between track days. No collision, as I knew they wouldn't cover track-use damage. The rate for my two Ducs is $547 a year full coverage (100/300/100, $100 deduct, 48 years old, own my home etc). The rate for adding the RR was an additional $326 w/o collision. Compared to the other bikes with collision, that seemed high. The agent then asked if the bike would ever be used at or on a track. I honestly said I would likely do 3-5 track days (not races) per year, but since I wasn't electing any collision coverage it shouldn't make much of a difference on comp or liability. She asked me to wait a moment. She came back to tell me that they could not insure a bike for ANY type of coverage (including basic comp in the locked garage), if it is ever used on the track. Needless to say our conversation was over, as the bike was now deemed uninsurable.

Given that, I'm sure many policies will not cover track damage if it is reported honestly.

They say if it's racing, or racing practice it's not covered.  Trackdays are non-competitive and you have to READ your policy carefully.  Insurance agents assume that it's all the same.  I got into a circular conversation like that when I called my insurance company.  I finally asked that she send me a copy of my policy.  It's around here somewhere and I'm sure I'll get around to reading it before my next trackday.

It's called "rider improvement", track days sounds too much like racing.

Makes sense and I agree. I'll call back tomorrow to see what happens with a different agent and "rider improvement" rewording.

i dont think it should be covered...my insurance is high enough. If youre on a track pushing your bike to its limits and taking on extra risks, that should be on you.

I fully agree. I was suggesting carrying liability (in case I chose to ride on the street), and comp to protect against fire/theft etc. Collision would be foolish, since if they investigated the claim, there would be no police accident report. WI has to have a report at loss over $1000 (assuming it happens on public roads). If not on public roads, they're going to get inquisitive. So with a $500 deductible, you have a narrow window of coverage without needing some documentation besides your story.

If you said it happened on a track, they would make it difficult regardless of what the fine print says. You wouldn't be the first person who has filed a track-day claim on a 600RR and the companies don't like to pay, so be prepared for many twists and turns trying to get it resolved. If you lied about "where" it happened, that's fraud, and a whole other set of issues.

So again, I think if you rash up your bike on the track, it's really your responsibility. Which is what I intended. Just my 2 cents.

We need those that have made truthful insurance claims to chime in.
My last trackday a guy on an R6 went down and the bike burst into flames.  I wonder what happened with that.
Side note: Most race orgs require tank protectors on Yamahas for that reason.  IDK why they catch fire so often but apparently they do.

+1. It would be great to know which insurance carriers are track-day friendly, and what if any rate premium they charge for prior knowledge.

The r6 catch fire because the tank sticks out past the frame. The tanks hits first gets ripped open and the sparks and fuel do the rest.
